A mummy is the body of a person (or an animal) that has been preserved after death. They were any Egyptian who could afford to pay for the expensive process of preserving their bodies for the afterlife.Aren’t you excited about the mummies?
Why the ancient Egyptians preserved the dead?
Do you think they fear death?May be because Egyptians were always thinking about the “so-called full stop” of earthly life and attaining the afterlife where they could live forever. In their religion, the body was needed in order for the “ba” (soul) of the person to unite with the “ka” of the person in the afterlife. So they consider this mummification as a away to their afterlife journey. When the mummified body acted as a homebase, it also was a link to the tomb, to the living and to the offerings that the living would bring. They also believe that these offerings by the living are set for their afterlife.
Osiris was an ancient Egyptian God who was the first recorded one in mythology to die and then reborn into the afterlife. When he died, his wife the goddess Isis had prepared and restored his body along with the help of her sisters. once Osiris body was repaired and wrapped up like a Mummy, he could become the eternal king of the afterlife. Osiris was the model for ancient egyptians. So they believed that if they imitated the process which undergone by Osiris ,they could also be reborn in the afterlife like him.
Facts:
The main process of mummification is to take out all the moisture from the body in order to preserve it from decay. During this process they remove all the internal organs through a long incision on the left side of the body except heart done by the priest known as “slicer”. because for them heart is the centre of intelligence. Brain- hooks were used to remove the brain through the nostrils after the person had died. The ancient Egyptians believed that in order for a person’s soul to survive in the afterlife ,it would need to have food and water. The mummies’ mouth kept open on the basis of the thought that the person who died could eat and drink again in the afterlife!
Recently the researches in Poland discover the world’s first known pregnant Egyptian mummy ,at the time the mummy was thought to have been a male priest. As reported by Associated Press, the pregnant mummy’s age has been estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old with 26 to 28 weeks baby in her womb.“Our first surprise was that it has no penis, but instead it has breasts and long hair, and then we found out that it’s a pregnant woman. When we saw the little foot and then the little hand (of the fetus), we were really shocked,” said Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist and archaeologist. According to their beliefs, mummies are preserved for their afterlife. So in this case, will the baby in the womb of the the woman also get the afterlife?

Sunderlal Bahuguna – The Chipko leader
“The solution of present-day problems lie in the re-establishment of a harmonious relationship between man and nature.”- Sunderlal Bahuguna
The renowned leader of the Chipko Movement, Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away on 21st May 2021 due to COVID complication at AIMS Hospital in Rishikesh. The legacy he has left for the eco-movement in India is priceless. It was him who proposed that an ecocentric economy must be of importance instead of an egocentric economy. He along with his wife Vimla Bahuguna has led numerous peaceful protests against government policies to protect the environment and its resources including the Chipko Movement and the protest against the construction of the Tehri dam.
Sunderlal Bahuguna was born in 1927 in Uttarakhand. From a very early age, he was influenced by Gandhian principles and started off his social commitments through a protest against untouchability. Later being aware of the loss of forests in the Himalayas led him to start the revolutionary Chipko Movement. He understood that women and nature closely interrelated and he led his protests for the protection of nature through women and this more or less strengthened the eco-feminism movement in India. He firmly believed in the three Gandhian principles of Swaraj, Swadeshi and Satyagraha. He believed that each village should have the freedom to produce and to decide for their development. He became the voice for mother earth. As he said” Politicians have loudspeakers. But who will speak for the trees that will be cut? Who will come forward for the dying river? Who will protect the mountains? It is now time to hear the voice of the tree being cut, the voice of the river, the scream of the mountain that is sliding.”
Though he primarily worked for the protection of the Himalayan ecosystem and the Ganga river system, He has led and strengthened environmental movements in different parts of the country as well as the world. This includes the Appiko movement in the Western Ghats and the protest to protect forests in Nairobi and many more. He walked from Kashmir to Kohima, almost 5000 kms on foot in the 1970s to spread awareness about the need to protect trees and forests.
He was awarded Padmasree in 1981 and Padma Vibhushan in 2009. Together with Vandhana Shiva and Medha Patkar he has authored different books on the environment including the famous ‘ India’s environment: Myths and Reality’. His life is an inspiration and a true role model for all environmental activists in the country. Not just environmental activism, he influenced and convinced women about their rights and the need for them to lead such movements. He has led several anti-liquor protests also in the Himalayas. His passion, determination and love for nature have helped in saving forests around the world. He was a true eco-warrior in the true sense.
Coronavirus Vaccines Highly Effective against B1.617.2 Variant
Coronovirus vaccine is highly effective against B1.617.2 variant, revealed by a Study in UK: A new study was conducted by some health officials in UK. It shocked everyone with its results. For the first time, it has revealed that the two doses of coronavirus vaccines are highly effective against the B1.617.2 variant i.e. the variant which was primarily reported in Maharashtra, India. It has also been referred as a double mutation variant throughout the world.

Coronavirus Vaccines effectiveness against B1.617.2 Variant:
As said by PHE (Public Health England) “The Pfizer or BioNTech vaccine was about 88 per cent effective against symptomatic COVID-19 from the B1.617.2 variant of concern (VOC) two weeks after the second dose, the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was 60 per cent effective against symptomatic disease from the B1.617.2 VOC.”
However after a single dose of jab of vaccine, it was not much effective against VOC found in India. It’s effectiveness was 33% only.
As per Matt Hancock, the health secretary of UK, “This new evidence is groundbreaking – and proves just how valuable our COVID-19 vaccination programme is in protecting the people we love,”.
He further said that “It’s clear how important the second dose is to secure the strongest possible protection against COVID-19 and its variants – and I urge everyone to book in their jab when offered, I’m increasingly confident we”re on track for the roadmap because this data shows the vaccine after two doses works just as effectively, and we all know that the vaccine is our way out of this”
As per the reports from analysis, the effectiveness of vaccine after two doses of jab is same in B1.617.2 variant as in the variant which is currenty present in UK. PHE (Public Health England) expects that the results will be more better in future and will be more effective against hospitalizations and deaths.
PHE also revealed that the difference in effectiveness between the vaccines after two doses could be explained by the fact that the second doses of AstraZeneca was rolled out a bit later than the Pfizer vaccine. The other data on antibody profiles showed that it usually takes longer to reach maximum effectiveness with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
A statement was also given by the vaccine deployment minister of UK, Nadhim Zahavi that “Today’s data is astounding and a true reflection of just how important it is to get both your jabs when offered. I encourage all those offered an appointment to get their jab booked in as soon as possible and take full advantage of the high levels of protection the vaccines bring”
PHE believes that since there are very less cases and insufficient follow up periods, it is taking longer for them to estimate the effectiveness of coronavirus vaccine against the B1.617.2 variant, but they believe that they will definitely be able to evaluate this in the future. They estimate this not only in the case of variant primarily reported in India but also in the case of other variants which are being reported from different parts of world.
Be the change!
The earth is dominated by one of the species on her lap, that is human. Human developed in his level best for a progressive life. They are ruling their empire well and dominating everything like a colonizer. But is it a sustainable development? Are we responsible for the drastic changes that are occuring in our environment? Climate change is upon us. Oceans are rising fires are raging…we need solutions fast. We have known for decades that rapid climate change has been caused by the release of greenhouse gases. But all are living like ‘this is not for us’ or listening to this information like a story in any fairy tales.
Each and every ignorance from the part of us is actually increasing our threat in the future. The recent news added to the warning from nature that she will react soon in order to mend herself. From May 13 onwards, the the European Space Agency (ESA) found that an enormous Antarctic ice shelf named A-76,the largest ice berg in the world, broken off which is three times bigger than Delhi !But why the scientists pay much attention to this? We have to know the truth that these sudden changes are due to the human caused climate change. If Antarctica ‘s entire ice sheet were to melt, it could raise sea level and gradually the land area reduced to the pages of history.
What are the Solutions?
We have two options in front of us- ‘mitigation’ (reducing and stabilizing the levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere) and ‘adaptation’ (adapting to the climate change already in the pipeline). Project drawdown ,a nonprofit group of researchers and scientist, compiled a list of solutions which one expanded over the next 30 years could reduce emissions by as much to 269.0 2 gigatons of CO2.so what are the solutions?
Refrigerant management: in 1987, 196 countries and the European union sign the protocol calling on all countries to reduce the use of CFCs in refrigerants by 1996. CFCs were replaced by HFCs which doesn’t damage the ozone but is an extremely potent greenhouse gas. HFC have thousand to 9000 times the capacity to trap heat than CO2 and gradually slow the rate of global warming.
Onshore wind energy: the solution provides a huge opportunity for low-cost and love mission energy creation. Turbines have small land footprint allowing for farming recreation and conservation of nature to continue under their shadows. By increasing 26% of wind energy production could avoid roughly 147 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In order to curb this issue ,we should expand the construction industry with the smart energy policy and generous government subsidies. Future of wind turbines could have substantial positive effect on our changing climate.
Plant rich diet: the fossil fuel demands associated with the animal feed, transportation, deforestation and animal emissions themselves makeup large chunk of global greenhouse emissions. The Project drawdown predicts that is just 50% of the world population adopts applied rich diet by 2050, we could avoid 65.0 5 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions. It is not easy… especially in a meat-centric food culture.
It is said that in 2050 the world will be more hostile and less fertile, more crowded and less diverse.we all have to register something in our mind that we are temporary in this Earth and are responsible to hand it over to our future generations without any damages. We are ought to make changes in our lifestyles against the ‘changes’ in order to preserve that gem with all its diversities and beauty.
“Be the change you wish to see in the world”-Mahatma Gandhi.
Cyclone Yaas to intensify into ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ : Report
Cyclone Yaas cross Odisha, Bengal : It is supposed to intensify into very severe cyclonic storm. It is likely to move towards West Bengal, adjoining Odisha and coasts of Bangladesh. IMD’s Ranchi’s meteorological centre recently warns nearby states for heavy rainfall and also issued an alert in Jharkhand due to the cyclonic storm.
A low pressure area formed over the east central Bay of Bengal and adjoining sea today and this is supposed to turn into very severe cyclonic storm which will affect West Bengal and nearby areas on 26 May.
Cyclone Yaas as per meteorological reports:
“The low pressure area is very likely to concentrate into a depression over east central Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, the 23rd May morning. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by 24th May and further into a very severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. ” the IMD said.

As per the pictures taken from satellite and information by meteorological centre, it would move further towards north west. The Ranchi meteorological centre also issued an alert related to a moderate to high thunderstorm and stormy winds blowing around with speed of 50km/h which is likely to appear on 25 or 26 may. In the areas most prone to cyclone, it is estimated by IMD officials that wind speed around Odisha, West Bengal and coasts of Bengal would reach upto 100km/h and will even increase thereafter.
It has been only one week since the tauktae storm hit the coasts of Gujarat. It caused a huge destruction there and in neighbouring areas and also a minor effect in northern states.
The NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams and Indian Navy are already keeping eyes on this. They are ready to assist the people of areas which are expected to be affected majorly. Light or moderate rainfall on other areas and heavy rainfall on areas near West Bengal, Odisha is expected. Heavy rainfall is also expected on 27 may on some areas.
Fisherman are already informed before and were advised to stay away from sea areas since 23 May. Apart from that, the railways around this region i.e. south western railways are also cancelled. As per sources around a dozen of trains are cancelled for 24 May to 26 May keeping the yaas cyclone in concern. And it is estimated that if cyclone won’t stop after 26, then cancellation of these train will step ahead further.
The effect of this cyclone will start appearing since 24 May with rise in wind speeds in nearby areas. The wind’s speed will gradually increase from 40 km/hr to 50 km/hr and at the time of arrival of cyclone it will end up reaching 100km/hr.
Today there was also a meeting held related to this by our prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi. He held a meeting with several officials of government to review the preparations done in advance for this upcoming disaster. Many ministers were included in this meeting including our home minister Amit Shah and some representatives from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and some other ministers to review the preparations.
The Inspiring Story of Vice President Kamala Harris
Growing up, Harris was surrounded by a diverse and challenging community. “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters” she wrote in her autobiography The Truths We Hold. Her adopted homeland saw Harris and her sister Maya as black girls but their mother made sure that they grew up into confident, proud black women.
She spent four years at Howard University, which was one of the most formative experiences of her life. After Howard, she earned her law degree at the University of California, Hastings and she started her career in the Almeda County District Attorney’s Office. In 2010 Vice President Harris was elected as California’s Attorney General and administered the largest state justice department in the United States. She was the first woman and first black person to serve California’s Attorney General. In 2017, Harris was pledged into the United States Senate. Ms. Harris has been married to a lawyer, Douglas Emhoff. She is the stepmother of two children, Ella and Cole who is currently her source of endless joy and love.
Vice President Harris is often considered close to Barak Obama, the first black American President, who supported her in her various elections. President-elect Joe Biden had told that he would be honoured to serve with Ms. Harris, who will make history as first woman, first Black woman, first Indian American women, and first daughter of immigrants ever elected to national office in this country. In her victory speech, Ms. Harris said that while she may be the first woman to occupy the vice president’s office, she would not be the last. Her victory reflects that no door is closed to Indian Americans in public. She knows the sovereignty of the American dream. Black Fungus Crisis In India! Symptoms, Cause, Treatment
What is Mucormycosis or Black Fungus? What are it’s symptoms, causes and treatment? Why there is sudden rise in cases of it? And who is at most risk?

From the past few days, many cases of black fungus are found in India. Black Fungus or Mucormycosis is a very rare and a dangerous fungal infection that could even lead to death. This disease was made notifiable to public by government of India on thursday after asking states to report detail of confirmed and suspected cases to Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.
Black Fungus cases have been confirmed in 18 states including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh. Most of these have confirmed it as a notifiable disease. Some states have also declared it as an epidemic like Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and union territory of Chandigarh.
Mucormycosis is a very rare and deadly infection caused by exposure to mucor mould. It is present everywhere including the surroundings like soil, plants, decaying fruits and vegetables and even in nose and mucous of healthy people as per Dr. Nair.
It affects brain, lungs, sinus, eyes and other parts and could be extremely dangerous, especially in the case of diabetic individuals or those with very low immunity such as patients of cancer or AIDS.
Basically the floating fungal spore is the cause of it. It can enter your body through any cut in your skin and cause infection. But it is more dangerous if it travel through nose or sinus.
The reported cases of this infection are usually those who were under treatment or were recovered recently. The overusage of steroids is triggering this fungal infection.
Those who are under treatment of Covid 19 are given steroids so that inflammation in their lungs could be reduced. But these steroids also result in reducing immunity and pushing up the sugar levels of infected whether he/she is diabetic or not. It is believed that reduction in immunity and a high increase in sugar level is the primary cause of it.
The disease is having a dangerous mortality rate of about 50%.And if not treated earlier, the doctors have to remove affected part by surgery to save the patient.
Black Fungus symptoms:
- Sinus Pain
- Nasal Blockage
- One sided headache
- Swelling or Numbness
- Toothache
- Loosening of teeth
- Chest Pain
- Blurry vision
- Blackness in skin
Who are at most risk?
- Recently recovered people from corona
- Diabetic people
- People with low immunity
- People who intake lots of steroids
- People suffering from Cancer or Aids
Prevention for Black Fungus
- Use masks
- Wear long sleeved clothes
- Wear shoes
- Maintain personal hygiene
- Exercise
- Control Diabetes
- Maintain Blood Sugar Levels
- Reduce steroids
- Keep hydrating yourself
- Discontinue immunomodulating drugs
There is no specific treatment of black fungus till now. The only option to cure it is by surgery which makes this disease more dangerous. As the infected people have to get their eyes, jaw or any part of body that is infected to cure it.Overall currently in this tough time, one need to stay at home, stay fit, have a healthy diet and exercise. Try to keep your immune system strong and keep patience in current situation.
White fungus – Another deadly disease?
What are the symptoms?
The infection is more deadly and lethal compared to black fungus according to experts in the field. Besides pulmonary infections, it affects skin, stomach, kidney, private parts, nails, and mouth. The symptoms are very similar to COVID including breathlessness, chest pain, cough, inflammation, swelling, and headaches. Usually, patients go for an antigen test or an RT PCR on seeing such symptoms but get a negative report. The white fungus can be detected by a CT scan or an X-Ray.
Who is the most affected?
The infection is primarily seen in COVID patients who have taken steroid medication as steroids reduce immune responses. Patients with low immunity like diabetes patients and cancer patients can be easily infected. Patients on oxygen support are more likely to be infected. The affected are treated with antifungal drugs and they have been showing improvement. How to prevent it?
Both black fungus and white fungus can be prevented by boosting immunity. For non-COVID-affected people, staying healthy and having nutritious food is the key and for COVID-affected patients avoiding overuse of steroids is necessary. Steroids should be used only if the oxygen levels drop significantly.
The Loneliest Man in History – Michael Collins
Michael Collins is declared to have suffered the heftiest loneliness ever in history. When the famous Apollo 11, descending from Colombia touched down on the lunar surface, on July 20, 1969, colonel Michael Collins remained in the Command Module and orbited several times above the lunar surface. His colleagues Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were lucky enough to make the first lunar landing in history. Michael Collins withstood loneliness in the next 22 hours while Armstrong and Aldrin spent their time on the moon. Collins had also lost contact with his crewmates and with NASA, his line of communication blocked as he flew over the moon’s far side. He suffered complete loneliness at that point. No one in the world might have ever suffered that. “I am alone now, truly alone, and absolutely isolated from any known life” he wrote in his 1974 memoir, “Carrying the fire”.
Collins was inquisitive in writing. He had a gift for writing about space and his remarkable yet unique experiences. Apart from “Carrying the Fire”, he was an author of ” Liftoff: The Story of America’s Adventure”(1988) and “Mission to Mars”(1990). Collins also admired the wonder and beauty of space. Even though he orbited above the elegant moon, he was mesmerised and fascinated by Mars.
Collins began flying in 1952, and has orbited the Earth 43 times in the Gemini 10 Capsule. It was Michael Collins who operated the most critical mission of Apollo 11. He was responsible for the safety and protection of his colleagues, Armstrong and Aldrin. Collins was the smartest of them all for he knew to fly the Apollo 11 Capsule, alone. Collins went on with orbiting the moon until July 21, when Armstrong and Aldrin joined him. They safely landed in the Pacific Ocean on July 24. Collin, Armstrong and Aldrin were awarded the Presidential medal of freedom by Richard Nixon.
While Michael Collins stayed behind, Aldrin and Armstrong made their historic first steps and became the first humans to walk on the moon. Because of which Collins is often called the “Forgotten Astronaut”. While everyone praised Neil Armstrong for making his first step on the lunar surface, Collins was the actual Guardian Angel because of which the historic incident successfully occurred. “He might not have received equal glory as others, but he was an equal partner, reminding our nation about the importance of collaboration in service of great goals. He reminded us of the fragility of our own planet and told us to care for it like the treasure it is” said, President Biden.
After retiring from NASA in 1970, he served in the US State Department. After a year, he became the director of the National Air and Space Museum. Later he stepped down and became the secretary of Smithsonian Institution. Even after that, he proceeded with active beneficial works.
Michael Collins passed away on April 28, 2021at the age of ninety. It is said that he died from cancer in Naples, Florida. Thereupon Collin’s death, NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk said “NASA mourns the loss of this accomplished pilot and astronaut, a friend of all who seeks to push the envelope of human potential”. Michael Collins is a remarkable soul to be remembered forever. His spirit will go with us. And the legacy he left behind will be learned.

The most fascinating of them is the underground city of Derinkuyu in Turkey which was discovered in 1963. The underground city of Derinkuyu was made in the 8th century to hide from continuous wars and extreme climatic conditions. It is an eighteen-storied underground town containing living rooms, schoolrooms, kitchens, wells, and even a winery that could hold 20,000 people inside. Ventilation, water, and light could reach every level and there were systems to seal each level during an attack. Such subterranean cities can be a solution to changing climatic conditions. As surface temperatures are increasing, governments are devising underground city master plans.
Extreme weather events like harsh winters and scorching summers can be avoided in such subterranean cities where ambient temperatures will be maintained throughout the year and heat loss is also significantly reduced. Drinking water sources are comparatively purer than surface water contaminated by runoffs and moreover, with the ever-growing population, there will be a shortage of land in the very near future. These could be some of the reasons why many countries around the globe have started focussing on such subterranean architecture.
Helsinki is an underground city that covers a massive area of 214 square kilometers containing tunnels, museums, swimming pools, and other recreation areas. This underground master plan was made to avoid extreme winters, war threats from Russia. Further such examples in today’s world can be seen in the Earthscraper in Mexico City, The Subtropolis Kansas city, and the proposed underground science city in Singapore.
Therefore, with the increasing risk of global warming and its consequences, it is very logical to plan underground spaces that can help to save both space and energy on the surface. With more and more countries showing interest in such architecture, underground plans could be the future of cities.
