Aspergillosis is an infection, allergic reaction, or fungal growth caused by the Aspergillus fungus. The fungus usually grows on decaying vegetation and dead leaves. Exposure to the fungus doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you’ll get aspergillosis. We all encounter the fungus everyday but it only people with weaker immune system or who have just recovered from some major health issues might catch this.

  1. Headaches
  2. Difficulty in Breathing
  3. Blood in urine
  4. Coughing and sneezing
  5. Pain in chest

  • How can it be treated?

  • Medications:

Oral or intravenous drugs like voriconazole (Vfend) can treat the invasive type of aspergillosis. If you have allergic aspergillosis, you may receive medication that suppresses your immune system, such as prednisone, along with antifungal drugs. Although the antifungal drugs can cause serious side effects later on.

  • Surgery:

Surgery in the form of lobectomy is the primary treatment. Surgery for aspergilloma is known to be risky because of massive hemorrhage during dissection and poor pulmonary reserve of the patient due to the underlying disease.

Menstrual Hygiene Day – 2 products that can make a change

May 28 is celebrated as World Menstrual Hygiene Day to create awareness among every individual about the challenges during menstruation. There are several taboos and stigma around the topic that prevents people from talking about it. These need to be broken and a conversation needs to be made between men and women about the topic to promote awareness and understanding of the issue.

A large portion of women in the developing world still uses cloth and other cheap alternatives like ashes and husks during their menstrual cycle. These are highly dangerous and can cause various infections. Switching to sanitary pads and tampons was a revolutionary step at the time as it allowed women to work freely without the fear of leakage. But with the further evolution of menstrual products in the market, much eco-friendly and safer products are made available.

Sanitary pads are made of plastics and absorbing chemicals which on burning causes pollution. Also, the amount of plastic sanitary pads used by women in their lifetime is huge. Such pads, if not used properly can cause rashes, urinary infections, and vaginal infections. Therefore better alternatives need to be explored.

 1.Reusable cloth pads

Most women are used to pad-like products and surveys report that the majority of women prefer them as they are comfortable and easy to use. For them, reusable cloth pads are the best options as they act exactly like sanitary pads but not made of plastic. They have good absorbing properties and a pack of about 500 will have 5-6 cloth pads that can be washed and used for every period for about 6 months. These are less expensive and less polluting compared to plastic sanitary pads and tampons

   2.Menstrual cups

Menstrual cups are the best menstrual product available in the market today. They are cups made of silicone. They are flexible cup-shaped products that can be inserted into the vagina. These can be used for up to 12 hours. A single cup can be reused for up to 10 years and the price range between 300-500. The price is very less compared to all other alternatives in the market. It has the least health risks and can be the most eco-friendly product.   Step up and switch to these better products for a greener and safer period!

Relief and restoration operations underway as Cyclone Yaas leaves trail of destruction in Odisha, West Bengal

Odisha Government has ordered early restoration of normalcy in the area hit by the Cyclonic storm Yaas yesterday. After reviewing the extent of damage in the North Odisha districts last evening in capital Bhubaneswar, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered restoration of at least 80 per cent electricity supply and road communication in the cyclone hit areas within 24 hours. He has also declared seven days relief to the people of 128 villages marooned by flash floods in the coastal districts like Bhadrak and Balasore.

AIR correspondent reports that Cyclone Yaas after lashing north Odisha with downpour and devastating winds with a speed up to 140 kilometres per hour, rescue relief and restoration teams have swung into action for early resumption of power and road clearance. Though the oceanic disaster did not cause much of a harm to electricity supply lines and telecom network, its damaging potential is evident in extensive inundation of low lying areas and massive destruction of trees especially in Bhadrak, Baleshwar and Mayurbhanj districts.

While a whopping six lakh fifty thousand people had been evacuated to safe shelters, thereby saving precious lives, two deaths have been reported one each from Baleshwar and Keonjhar district. Meanwhile, the Biju Patnaik International Airport in capital Bhubaneswar has resumed service from last evening after being shut for less than 24 hours, as part of cyclone preparedness.

In West Bengal, Administration is making assessments of the damage caused by the impact of the severe cyclone Yaas which made landfall. Extremely high tidal waves and stormy wind along with heavy to very heavy rainfall flooded low lying and coastal areas and also submerged nearby villages and towns in several districts of Bengal.

At several places, disaster management teams rescued people who were stranded due to sudden rush of water, either by breaking the embankments or overflowing the guardwalls. Agricultural land has been extensively damaged due to inflow of saline water in the fields.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata that at least 1 crore people have been affected and three lakh houses damaged due to rough weather conditions arising out of the cyclone. 134 river embankments along the coastal districts have either broken or been damaged by its impact. The Chief Minister will visit the affected areas of North and South 24 Parganas and East Medinipur on 28th and 29th of May.

Severe Cyclone Yaas enters Jharkhand with gusty winds; Over 11,000 people shifted to safer places

The deep depression over south Jharkhand and adjoining north interior Odisha moved northwestwards with about seven kilometre per hour during past six hours and the cyclone Yass lay centred at 5.30 A.M. over south Jharkhand and neighbourhood. It is about 70 kilometres west-southwest of Jamshedpur and 70 kilometre south south-east of Ranchi. India Meteorological Department, IMD said, the system is very likely to move nearly northwards and weaken gradually into a depression during the next six hours.

Cyclone Yaas hit Jharkhand late last night. State Disaster Management Department, local District Administration and NDRF teams are on mode to handle any casualty. Vaccination drive has been put to halt for two days in Ranchi, East Singhbhum and Saraikela Kharsawan district. Seven districts have been put on Orange while four districts on Red by the Weather Department.

AIR correspondent reports that Cyclone Yaas has entered Jharkhand through East Singhbhum district. Announcements by the District Administration are being continuously made for people to stay indoors and not move out of their homes. Koylanchal area including Bokaro, Dhanbad, Koderma and Giridih districts will now be less affected by the Cyclone storm Yaas, while Ranchi, Khunti, Simdega, Gumla and other nearby districts of Jharkhand are witnessing the impact of Cyclonic storm Yaas with intermittent heavy rainfall and gusty winds blowing at a speed of 50-60 km per hour.

The Weather Department has predicted extremely heavy to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms for the next two days. Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that he has been closely monitoring the effects of the cyclone in the state and giving instructions to local administration and NDRF teams to safeguard people.

Many places are facing power cut since yesterday while many trees have been uprooted at several places of the state. More than 11,000 people have been shifted and rescued to safer places and makeshift shelter homes in Saraikela Kharsawan, East and West Singhbhum districts.

New Online Academic Year, New Hopes

The door to yet another online academic year is about to open, amidst the worsening pandemic crisis. Bored by their previous experiences, students hesitate to get underway their similar routes. Students were nearly getting a kick out of their shores of hopes, awaiting campus fullfilment. But their hopes were shattered by the second yet dangerous wave of coronavirus followed by deadly infections such as yellow, black and white fungus. People are getting used to this prolonged period of closures. Everything is getting shut down, so are people’s minds.

As the situation shrouding us is getting worse, teachers are off to adopt the mandatory online mode of teaching once again. Educators and administrators are forced to make an effort out of the challenges offered by the crisis. After a year of suffocation, students and teachers are almost used to this online teaching mode. Even though everyone knows the truth that education through digital screens will not be as lively and joyous as education in classrooms, we are bound to find new possibilities from these limitations. This new academic year may also be an opportunity for us to evaluate, correct and update our minds and body.

 Disadvantages of Online Classes
Smartphone classrooms were devoid of actual attention and brightness, instead, it was stuffed with boredom, negligence, painful memories and dimmed hopes. Kindergartens missed their excitement of packing up bags, hanging newly bought water bottles and jumping into their school bus with an urge to mingle. The major loss was experienced by school and college students. Cancelled sports day and cultural fests, no shared lunches or canteen snatches, no farewells and tours, and massively increased screen time marked 2020-21 academic session. Smartphones and laptops became the backbone of education. Well, along with education, we should consider its addiction too. Watching countless movies or episodes and sleeping for hours became a “new normal” routine for students. The non-availability of gadgets, which was a serious issue last year, currently boosted. It is now normal for school students to keep their own smartphones or laptops.

 Benefits of Online Classes
Blended learning also includes some benefits such as reduced time and elimination of travel costs. Students can also achieve several internships and online courses easily. Benefiting from these would aid your career in future. One could also get easy attendance by sitting at the comfort of your homes.

Ways to enhance online learning
 • Learning empowered with Videos and Notes.
Giving essential notes along with videos would bring a versatile and convenient flare to education. They serve as go-to resources that can be viewed anytime from anywhere.
Virtual Study Trips
Virtual trips increase the interest in students and grab their attention.
Do not burden students with too many lectures and assignments. Divide lectures into small chunks. Give limited assignments so that they could put their efforts in it fully.
Make time for fun
Engage students with interesting games and competitions. There are several platforms to do so. It’s all about engagement.
Reduce time

Attending online class continuously for 6-8 hours is exhausting and harmful for health. Reducing time and creating more quality content is more helpful for both students and teachers.
Prevent cheating in exams and sharing of academic documents.

Despite the challenges and flaws of last year’s online learning, we can expect this year to be a better, promising one. Have gotten ideas on enhancing your e-learning, lets hope students and teachers utilise the best of it.

Hidden in Ads

Advertisements possess a special power to influence the minds of people and the continuous presentation of the same is capable to register the idea which conveyed through it. But the audience not only perceive the upper layer of meaning but also the hidden elements in it. Why do the ads of kitchen related things are presented by women? These minor elements have a huge impact on the budding minds of children which unintentionally spread the same wrong ideas that are part of so called tradition. This again fix the idea that these responsibilities are exclusively of woman.

For example the advertisement of vim, in which the women in the ad is a home maker and the son is asking about her job after filling his Father’s job as bank manager to fill a form. the ad clearly underlines the fact that she is talented enough to be a Baker but the loaded works in the house, keep her away from her dreams.Husband expressed his helplessness towards her by saying that don’t you have a dream to open a bakery? And continued to looking at her working hands without helping her.At that time the miracle happens!!! ‘Vim’ is equal to the time saver and helped her to complete her task quickly and started her bakery!!! “Prove your identity” is the tag line of the ad which is positive and a motivation to the womanhood to follow her dreams without spare her time inside the four walls of her house. But still the advertisement never brings a revolutionary movement instead it only shows their product as a helper for her.If the husband is ready to help her and her turning point would be a positive note, but these presentation of fixed notions only helps to create the same idea among people …But not a change.

6 months to Farmers protest

Various farmer’s unions and opposition parties are observing ‘Black day’ on May 26th Wednesday marking 6 months of the farmers’ protest that started on 9 August 2020. A nationwide protest day has been organized with the support of various political parties.

The protest started against three ordinances that were passed by the parliament and signed by the President. They are (i) The Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) ordinance 2020 (ii)The farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance & Farm services ordinance 2020 (iii) The Essential Commodities( Amendment) ordinance 2020.The current provisions of law restrict farmers from selling their produce outside their notified APMC markets where the government set MSP will be given. Also, farmers are supposed to sell their produce only to registered licencees of the state government. The APMCs are maintained by the state government and they charge a percentage as tax. The new law relaxes these restrictions and allows farmers to sell their produce outside mandis and to all traders(including those without licenses) like corporates on a contract basis.

The protest arises mainly on four aspects of the new laws; Trade area, trader, market fee, and dispute resolution. The majority of the Indian farmers are less educated and not well versed in the legalities of contracts. Farmers can be easily manipulated and tricked into contracts with corporates as most  farmers cannot afford legal advisors. Secondly farmers fear the system of Minimum Support Price (MSP) may end eventually as APMCs may decline. The corporates can provide high prices in the initial years diverting the whole market to themselves till a stage where APMCs decline and later they will be the sole body deciding prices in the market.

The protest grew over the months with support from different parts of the country. Farmers from Punjab and Haryana marched to Delhi where they were blocked at the check posts. Many organizations came forward to help them. And several leaders have sent letters to the government asking them to repeal the laws. Amidst the strong protest, the government stayed the implementation of the laws for 18 months. But the farmers stayed adamant on their need and asked for a complete repeal of the laws.

Peaceful protests in Hisar that led to the release of arrested farmers have further fuelled the protest and black flags were hoisted at various protesting sites as a symbol of their dissent. Due to COVID restrictions, the protest is now carried out at a slow pace. Almost 12 political parties have extended their support to the cause. They are Congress, TMC,NCP,DMK,Shiv Sena,Samajwadi Party,JMM,RJD,CPI,CPM and others. The farmers are determined to protest until they achieve their goal.

What is Yellow Fungus? Know causes, effects, prevention and more.

The second tide of coronavirus is finally slowing down with daily cases in India dropping to below 2 lakhs. But new fungal infections are followed by its result. The most recently reported one is the deadly “yellow fungus”. After Black and White fungus, cases of yellow fungus appear in U.P. First case of yellow fungus was reported in Ghaziabad. The 45-year-old patient, who is undergoing treatment, is suffering from yellow fungus as well as black and white fungus. Yellow fungus is known to be more dangerous because it originates internally, which makes it more difficult to detect and treat.

 Symptoms of yellow fungus
• Weight loss
• Sunken eyes
• Failure of organs
• Wound heal slowly
• Permanent death of cells
• Leakage of pus
• Malnutrition

 Causes of yellow fungus
Yellow fungus is mainly caused by a lack of hygiene. Poor hygienic people are more tend to be affected by this deadly infection. Humidity levels below 30-40 per cent can also stimulate the growth of fungus. Dull and old food can also lead to the growth of this virus. Remove old food and faecal matter in and around your house to help prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus.

 Treatment of yellow fungus
The only known treatment till now for this infection is Amphotericin B injection, which is an antifungal drug. It is also used in the treatment of black fungus. Precautions to take
• Keep your house and surroundings clean.
• Do not consume dull and old food.
• Check the humidity in the room often. Too much humidity promotes the growth of yellow fungus. Start to maintain cross ventilation.

• To avoid complications of the yellow virus, covid-19 patients should begin their treatment as soon as possible.

Understanding black fungus

This disease is caused by a kind of mould called ‘micromycetes, present in our surroundings. The infection affects those who are highly immunocompromised and have diabetes. Another cause of its growth is that to deal with COVID-19 patients, steroids are used to lessen the inflammation in the respiratory tracts. Such patients have been detected to be more prone to get this infection. Moreover, people with pre-existing morbidity such as diabetes, impaired kidney function or cancer are at higher risk of getting infected and they need to be very carefull.

The onset of white fungus

White fungus or ‘aspergillosis’ affects people with low immunity and comorbidities such as diabetes. Over usage of steroids is yet a factor in the onset of this disease. Unlike yellow and black fungus, this variant affects numerous parts of the body such as the nail bed, skin, stomach, kidney, brain and reproductive organs.

So, stay informed and alert of health changes arising due to the Covid-19 infection and keep in touch with a doctor.Whether it is about symptoms or side-effects, it is crucial to be doubly sure, so that you don’t run into crisis in any way. The only thing one must do, while dealing with Covid-19 at home, is to be in continual touch with a trusted doctor. If there are any serious symptoms, including low oxygen concentration, chest pain, and more, then it’s necessary to take immediate action. As we know, prevention is better than cure anyway.

Social Media Giants to be banned in India?

Four ways social media platforms could stop the spread of hateful content in aftermath of terror attacks

Is this true that Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram will be banned in India from 26th May 2021?

  • In February 2021, the Central government of India came up with  a new set of IT rules and regulations. These rules imply authority over social media by appointment of compliance officials, giving their name and contact address in India, complaint resolution, monitoring of objectionable content, compliance report and removal of objectionable content. As per sources, some platforms have demanded six months deadline to take up this matter in the US Headquarters and wait for their decision . Currently only Koo App has complied with the  new rules and is ahead of the deadline. The question here is what if these platforms do not comply with the new IT rule? If the government plans on banning these platforms, is our individual rights at risk?

  • It’s important to know the sub section(1) of section 79 of IT Act. The IT Act gives protection to social media companies and web services by making them “intermediaries”. This means they are not responsible for user content. So here the government means that if any Social Media company fails to adhere to the new rules then they might lose the protection that the  “intermediaries” have.

  • As per data cited by the government, India has 53 crore WhatsApp users, 44.8 crore YouTube users, 41 crore Facebook subscribers, 21 crore Instagram clients, while 1.75 crore account holders are on microblogging platform Twitter. Koo has close to 60 lakh users, making it a major social media intermediary under the new guidelines. Many Indian are upset with this news but as of now all the social media apps are working in India so let’s wait for further information.

Widespread protest over the new “reforms” by Lakshadweep administrator

Lakshadweep is the smallest Union territory of India situated 220-440 kms across the south western coast of the country. It is a group of 36 small islands where only 11 of them are inhabited by people.Kavaratti, the largest of the islands, is the capital of the union territory. Almost 99% of the population are muslims and fishing is their primary occupation.Major languages in the island are Malayalam,Jeseri and Mahl. The island is dependent on the state of Kerala for education, health, jobs and trade.Customarily Lakshadweep was governed by administrators ( IAS/IPS officers ) with the support and consultation with elected district panchayath. This was the case till december 2020.But the demise of the then administrator Dineshwar Sharma IPS changed the scenario altogether as the Centre appointed Praful Patel as the administrator of Lakshadweep. He is not an IAS/IPS officer but a BJP leader who was the Home minister of Gujarat when the current Prime minister was Gujarat’s Chief minister.

The series of “reforms” he brought about which are being opposed by the islanders are; The island has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. The jail in Lakshadweep remains closed throughout and there is a police station for name sake. But the new administrator has implemented the Goonda Act in the island. Meat was removed from the lunch menu of the schools and he has also called for banning of cattle slaughter and beef consumption. This is seen as a direct attack on the culture of the island.200 temporary appointed high school teachers were dismissed and the students who protested against this were suppressed. Several anganwadis were closed in the island.

The administrator reduced the powers of the elected district panchayat and brought education, health, agriculture, fishing, local governing and animal conservation under his direct control. Two dairy farms were closed stating that they were running at loss. And it is now reported that milk is being exported from Gujarat to the island.Trade with the mainland usually happens through Beypore Port in Kerala now it has been diverted to Mangalore port. Also bizarre rules like people with more than 2 children  being exempted from contesting elections are also reported from the island.

The administrator defends himself saying that he is making these reforms to develop the island and to boost tourism here. Stating the same he has removed the sheds and other fishing equipment from the shore which was used by the fishing folks. The island was dry land but the administrator has approved the opening of beverages.

The greatest opposition was against changing the existing SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for COVID. The island was among the parts of the country in the green list during the first wave with zero cases reported. This was due to the strict quarantine measures implemented in the island. But the new administrator relaxed the rules to promote tourism which led to drastic increase in cases with the positivity rate going beyond 13%.

Huge protests against these policies are being held by islanders. But the islanders cannot involve themselves in direct protest due to covid restrictions, therefore the protest is held majorly online. The islanders have also started protesting at their footsteps. Also elected representatives and natives have contacted public figures and politicians to extend support to their cause and to bring their plight to mainstream media. The official Lakshadweep media handles were suspended and the twitter handles that posted against these reforms were taken down.Various requests have been made to the president to recall the administrator.

People have claimed that the BJP is trying to implement its facisit agenda in the island. But the BJP leaders have cleared this stating that these reforms are for the development of the island and to make it a tourism hub.”Unity in Diversity ” is our nation’s hallmark, therefore factors that disrupt this unity should not be encouraged even at the cost of development. Also freedom to choose the development that we want for our place should be accounted for. Development should never be at the cost of the lives and culture of the people of that place.

China Issues Total Ban On Synthetic Cannabinoids

China will proudly become the world’s first nation to ban all synthetic cannabinoid substances, the country’s National Narcotics Control Commission declared. This endeavour is liable to come into effect on July 1. It echoes China’s continued efforts to crack down on new psychoactive substances. Xi Jinping, existing President of China, aims to advance China to its glory through his grand strategy of “National Rejuvenation”.

According to Chinese councils, more than eight thousand variations of synthetic cannabinoids are manufactured worldwide. While some are being produced domestically, others are being smuggled from abroad. As it is becoming one of the most abused new psychoactive substances it spawns severe health risks. It is also highly cloaked and camouflaged. Some are detected in e-cigarette oil and some in cut tobacco formulated from leaves, flower petals etc. The former U.S. President Trump irritatedly criticised China for shipping synthetic opioids into the U.S. Cannabinoid substances stance a severe threat to society and its use and abuse increased alarmingly in the last few years. Hence, it is arising as a public health problem. Many of these drugs create enormous threats for abuse, addiction or overdose than the remaining drugs of abuse that they replace. One of the primary concerns about the widespread usage of these dopes is that their properties are unpredictable, hence the degree of threat they pose is unlikely.

Synthetic cannabinoids represent the largest group of drugs detected and reported worldwide to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Sprayed on natural herb mixtures, it is often sold as “herbal smoking blends” or “herbal scent” under several brand names. Synthetic cannabinoids have been linked with deaths and acute intoxications in Europe and many other areas. In addition to being more powerful than natural cannabis, it may also have long half-lives, dangerously leading to a prolonged psychoactive effect. These are human-made chemicals and it alters your mind too. These chemicals are labelled cannabinoids because of their similarity to marijuana plant chemicals. Because of this resemblance, synthetic cannabinoids are often misleadingly titled synthetic marijuana or fake weed. Hence they are traded as safe and legal. In fact, they are not at all safe and may harm the brain much more intensely than marijuana and in some cases, it may even be life-threatening.

Health effects of synthetic cannabinoids

• Violent behaviour

• Heightened moods

• Severe anxiety

• Confusion

• Paranoia

• Hallucinations

• Rapid heart rates

• Vomiting

• Gloomy thoughts

How do people take synthetic cannabinoids
The most common way of using this synthetic cannabinoid is by smoking the dried plant material. Users also buy synthetic cannabinoid products as liquids to try them in e-cigarettes.
Its overdose may result in kidney damage and seizures.

Thus, China added synthetic cannabinoids to its list of banned drugs. It is the second time that the Chinese government imposed a class-wide ban on a substance after it controlled all fentanyl-related drugs in 2019. The changes may take effect on July 1. It is a new situation and a new challenge for China. China knows and they stood up for themselves, creating a new world, new life for its people. They are saving their people from the nightmares of chemical slavery. Let us all hope for the best.
