 With Giannis antetokoumpo a Greek national born in Nigeria winning the 2021 NBA title, the question has to be asked “With basketball becoming more international than ever, can the game find solid footing in India?”. 

The answer unfortunately is not a simple yes or no, no matter how much we want it to be. The truth is in the last two decades basketball has become quite popular in the urban communities across India. Every park, school, college, society has a hoop kids can play in. NBA icons like Michael Jordan, Lebron James and late Kobe Bryant motivate and inspire kids as much as any other sportsperson. 

And yet the sport’s popularity remains in the shadows. It has little representation in the popular culture, movies, it doesn’t even have a league like IFC for football. Now part of it is because cricket rules supreme in India (but surely a nation of a billion people can have more than one sport) and the other is because the groundwork for the sport never existed in the country. 

BFI the governing body of basketball clearly didn’t have a lot of success in nurturing the talent that existed in the country. The Indian national team never had a great record in the international tournaments not to sat they’ve never had any. But the trend seems to be taking a turn for the better. NBA association has opened schools for developing talent from a young age, BFI in controlled collaboration seems to only benefit from it. 

It is only a matter of time when the prodigies of India take their place in the international tournaments and the country is exposed to the beauty of the game. Basketball aficionados of the country are hungry for a rise in the sport and they might just get their wish. Who know maybe we’ll have one of our won lifting the NBA trophy one day!

 Humans. What are humans; Made by god that we believe even if it feels like mythological but still we believe in it. It is scientifically proven we are ancestors of a Monkey which is very much square and fair but that doesn’t mean we still need to think like them. World is changing rapidly and so we are. Technology, our environment and our lifestyle totally. 

But one thing that have never changed and that is the way we think. Our mentality still very much of BC’s or i can say same as a Monkey or worse than a monkey. You may think, what I’m talking about or may have got my point. We humans now a days think like an Orthodox wearing fancy cloths which only differs us from an un talk able animal. We, humans degrades another human to look superior mentally and physically which is very low standard act. We constantly torment a person to the limit that leads to harmful outcome. Depression, mental torture or most dreadfully Suicide which is very common in teenage now a days. We takes things lightly when it comes to commenting about others. Easily judging, spreading non existence deeds. It is said you will know the pain they go through when you place yourself on their place. But do we? Instead we revolt about it. so are we really humans? 

Humans are describe as understanding, lovable, sharing, caring, brave, smart etc but are we? The action we carry in our daily life doesn’t similar with the description at all.  Daily there are updates regarding action towards abused victims non stop not only in India but world wide. Forget about same flash and blood, we have been such sick mental people that we doesn’t even feel remorseful towards the un talk-able animals torturing them. 

Humans have forgotten their inner self. Humans become hunger for fame, money and lust for which they are ready to cross such in-human boundaries of nature. Humans are believer of gods, creation of gods but did god really created humans for such deed to occur. Only because of humans, our nature is revolting against us. Nature has reached its limit. All cause by humans only.One day whole world will end, only because of HUMANS.

We must think twice no ten times at least before commenting about someone, before taking a step. Think about the outcome of your small act. It can save a life. It can provide a reason for someone’s living. It can give a reason someone’s action. We learn from each other. If one can change; others will change at time. Before judging someone always think placing yourself on their place and if you can’t place then you don’t judge them. No one has right to take decision for someone else. God has provide each similar part of body to all human beings in-order to think, function according your own-self. Instead of listening or telling others, behave yourself and let behave others.

Reason behind the hike of fuel prices

Recently, people have been facing lots of difficulties because of the sudden increase in petrol and diesel prices. Petrol prices crossed over Rs 100 per liter in several Indian cities over the past few weeks, putting pressure on household budgets. While the increase in prices of petrol and diesel can be explained by rising international fuel prices to some extent, the high incidence of taxes on these products also has an important role to play.

Tax effect on Fuel Prices

India meets its domestic oil demand mainly through imports. While international crude prices have risen sharply in the last six months, a major reason for the high selling price of petrol is the high levy of local taxes. The central government levies excise duty and cess on fuel, and states levy a value added tax. Taxes together constitute 58 per cent of the retail selling price of petrol and around 52 per cent of the retail selling price of diesel at present.

This means that if the price of petrol is Rs 100 per liter, taxes levied by the central government and state governments together account for Rs 58. Of this, the central government’s tax is Rs 32-33. The rest of the amount is levied by the state governments. The last time fuel prices in India surged was in 2010-2011 and 2013-2014. That too this was because the international crude oil prices rose sharp and touched the all time high.

Why government are reluctant to reduce taxes on fuel

The central government have been reluctant to reduce the fuel prices even when the international crude prices are rising because this tax is the main source for revenue. It has collected over 3.89 lakh crores in excise duty during 2020-21. This rate has grown a whopping 62 percent compared to 2.39 lakh crores in 2019-20, of which a majority is estimated to be from taxes and excise on petrol.

The increase in tax collections came despite the fact that petroleum consumption has been decreased by 9 percent due to the stoppage of movement on account of the covid-19 lockdowns. At that time, the government has decided to increase the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 10 and Rs 13 respectively. This decision came just after two months of the hike excise on petrol and diesel by Rs 3.

Inflation impact on Common Man

The rise in fuel prices has added additional pressure to India’s inflation, which crossed 6 percent in May. Earlier this month, the MPC had also flagged the impact of the high fuel prices on overall input prices. It had urged the central government and the state governments to cut taxes on petrol and diesel in a coordinated manner. India’s fuel inflation was at 11.6 per cent in May, as against 7.9 percent in April.

There are also concerns that an increase in fuel prices may have an adverse impact on excessive expenditure as households cut the latter out to accommodate higher fuel prices. As transportation is an important part in their daily life, there has been many protests to bring down the fuel prices which can be afforded by everyone.

What are consonants?

Speech sounds are of two types vowels and consonants . A consonant is a speech sound during the articulation of which there is an obstruction with in the oral cavity or a narrowing of the air passage by various organs of speech so that lung air escapes with audible friction . In other words , all speech -sounds necessitating a closure or narrowing ,which involves plosion or friction ,are called consonants .

Consonants are produced in one of the two ways : either there is a closing movement of one of the speech organs forming such a narrow constriction that it is possible to hear the sound of the air passing through or the closing movement may involve the lips ,the tongue or the throat . The over-all effect in each case is quite different from the open unobstructed articulation found in the case of vowels .

During the production of certain consonants , vocal cords vibrate . Those consonants that involve the vibration of vocal cords are called voiced consonants . During the production of the rest of the consonants ,vocal cords do not vibrate .Those consonants that are produced without the vibration of vocal cords are called voiceless consonants .This distinction ,however ,is not absolute .The position of the consonant in a word , to a great extent , determines the degree of voicing .For example , if a voiced consonant appears at the end of a word it loses a great deal of its vibration . The /z/ sound at the beginning of the word zebra /zi:bra/ is much more vibrant than the /z/ sound at the end of the word jazz /dzaez/.

First, let me start my article with a question. What will you do in you spare time or free time these days? Everyone would answer that since it is pandemic time we are in home using gadgets in our free time right. Now, this has been the trend these days. Okay, let me put it this way. What will you do in your free time before pandemic. The answer is gadgets only. We have been immersed in the world of gadgets these days. What is a leisure time, guys? It is to make yourselves and your mind to set free of thoughts. But how can we say, using mobile phone in free time set your mind free? Just think about it. Now, let me tell you about the spare time these days and spare time during the late 20’s.

I think the 90’s kids and early 2k kids are the ones who enjoyed their spare time carefree even without a mobile phone. Because the environment and generation they grew up is like that. There will be only button phones those days. These kids in spare time, if they are farming family, those kids would do farming related works such as to feed the cattle, goats etc. If they have no work in their home, they would go out early and come home late in the evening. They spent their time by playing, cricket, kabbadi, etc., but most of them would play outdoor games. They used to swim in the well, catch fish and eat, roam around the area they live, and so on. Girls would spend their time by playing indoor games like dayam, chess, snake and ladders etc., because most of the girls are not allowed to go out too far. Parents those days never worried about them. But think about it now?

These 2k kids might not know the craze for icecream. Since, I’m an early 2k kid, I know how I waved for eating ice-cream. Also, the ice-cream van would come once or twice a week only. The kids would please their mom or dad, to buy that icecream. The taste in the icecream that we craved for is shown in everyone’s face. Then, if it’s some function or some ritual days, there will always a moving toy shop. Reduction of air pollution and maintaining air quality : The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 (the “Air Act”) is an act to provide for the prevention , protection and abatement of air pollution .It provides for establishment of Boards at the Central and State levels with a view to carrying out the aforesaid purposes.

3. Hazardous Waste management : legislations that directly or indirectly deal with hazardous waste management are the Factories Act, 1948, the Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991, the National Environment Tribunal Act, 1995 and rules and notifications under the Environmental Act.

4. Containment cleanup, damage mitigation : preventing future damage to the environment is undeniably the primary objective of environmental law, mitigating and reducing existing damage is also important. This area most often deals with issues like toxic leaks and oil spills. The central objective of this branch of environmental law is deciding liability, planning an appropriate response, and also determining the best process of investigation and monitoring in the overall clean up process. This area also concerns itself with the study and assessment of risk in the long term, to better mitigate any future accidents and risks.

WHAT IS PHONETICS?

For the communication language is used in two ways speech and writing. A systematic study of the spoken and written. A systematic study of spoken and written forms of language is called linguistics. The branch of linguistics that deals with the spoken forms of the language is known as phonetics. It studies the production, transmission and reception of speech sounds. It deals with all possible sounds human vocal organs can produce.

Phonetics can be classified into three groups.

  1. Articulatory phonetics: It deals with the movements of the speech organs in the production of speech sounds. It studies how the outgoing air from the lungs is regulated along the vocal tract to make different speech sounds.
  2. Acoustic phonetics: The transmission of sound from the speaker to the listener is studied by acoustic analysis. Acoustic phonetics deals with the physical properties of speech sound like frequency and amplitude.
  3. Auditory phonetics: it deals with the reception and perception of speech sounds.

Switching from books to computers, notes in copy to PDF file, pencil/pens to keyboard keys, white board to power point presentation, question papers to online exams is a huge change.

When I attended my online examination, I was anxious, but after I attended the first exam, I felt like, I was more stress free, like we don’t have to worry for long question paper, all questions were conceptual. I have never been so stress free during an exam before. Best thing is that I can sit on my chair near study table in my comfort zone and give the exam.

Applying reader response theory to Ernest Hemingway’s Hills like White Elephants

Ernest Hemingway, has penned out hills like white elephants without providing much background information, clear conversation markers or information on characters’ background, not even proper names. A reader is left with several loose ends and scenarios so as to explain the story. Further, I will be explaining what I could make out from the story as a reader. 

Set near the Ebro river in Spain, the american and the girl are waiting for a train. The story advances through the short exchanges between the two characters. From the conversation, it is almost clear that the male character is trying to persuade the female character to do something. The female character, skeptical about the situation, appears to be trying to convince herself to be as confident as her companion. The characters are seen talking about “letting the air in” (Hemingway, 230) and everything being fine afterward, taking instances and conversations as proof, it feels like the man is forcing or rather trying hard to convince the female into an abortion. The woman comes out through the story as if she is convinced about the situation, she drinks without a limit almost as to prove she doesn’t care about the infant inside her. She dreams about her life after the procedure and seeks validation from the man, she needs to be sure that everything will be like before. It shows how she depends on his assurance, it shows how dependent she could be on the man. 

The story, which revolves around the conversation of the two characters, is open to many interpretations. As a reader, I feel that the woman is trying to strike a balance between what she wants and what he wants, but in the end she realises her old life is precious to leave just like that.

Now, on the outside if you look at the numbers while Apple Music has only 72 million users Spotify has more than 345 million users and the rest of the competition is not even close. Fortunately or unfortunately, in 2021, Spotify is in deep-deep trouble. 

While on one side the losses of the company have been stacking up rapidly On the other side with the giants entering the streaming market Spotify is officially in a business war. The distribution channels of the music CDs made the record labels and musicians billions of dollars every single year. But in the 1990s the Internet and the computer revolution began to pick up resulting into massive penetration of both, computers and web, into the American household. Now, people if you see this is a fine culmination of technology and connectivity and if you observe closely every time this golden combination happens, it gives rise to a new generation of startups. In the music industry, it was the company called Napster which was started way back in 1999 by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. 

In simple words Napster was nothing but a music torrent instead of buying a CD for 20 dollars you can download an MP3 file for free and share it with your friends And you know what guys? This invention was a disruption in the making because what followed next was the first wave of music streaming. And this wave did not just change the way people listen to music it literally changed the entire music industry. Within a few months it had 4 million song downloads and in less than a year, Napster had 20 million users. Now, initially, people thought that it’s no big deal. But in sometime, the numbers of Napster exploded further, to 60 millions users by 2001. And this is when the record labels began to realize that their stores are incurring losses and when they actually computed it shocked them to see that they were incurring more than $100 million in losses due to Napster.

 And that’s when hell broke loose for Napster. They got slapped with a lot of lawsuits and what followed next was the historic suit that led Napster to pay millions of dollars to artists, creators and record label companies eventually they had to shut down their operation in sometime. Now, while most people thought that piracy will be gone and that CDs will be back as it turns out, Napster left the market but the behavioural design of the society had been so strongly altered that people just didn’t go back to CDs at all. 

The CD stores were still closing down and other piracy websites took the place of Napster. Companies were still incurring millions of dollars of losses because people just wouldn’t pay $20 for an album. And this is where record labels were desparately looking out for an alternative to actually get their distribution channel back on track. And while all of this drama was going on, there was one man who noticed this and decided to become an opportunist during the times of chaos. And this man was none other than the legendary Steve Jobs himself and the solution that he brough to the table was to give people ultra cheap music and to give record labels a non-piratable distribution channel for their music. And this solution was none other than the iconic iPod and the rest is history. 

The record labels again started to make billions of dollars customers fell in love with the iPod as it brough along the second wave of music streaming revolution.  There were two major problems over here. Number one, not everyone owned an iPod or a Macbook and number two, not everyone could pay for each album. but everyone had the computers and the Internet. So, guess what? This culmination of technology and connectivity, again, gave rise to another generation of startups and the most successful player in this segment turned out to be none other than Spotify which started way back in 2006. 

Spotify learnt from the pains of the customers and decided to build a music streaming platform that could be used by everyone and could be used by everyone for free and this is where Spotify deploys its freemium model with an option to subscribe but this time it wasn’t easy because they knew what happened to Napster and the subscription model was way more complex than the discreet model of iTunes. Because when it comes to CDs or iTunes, it was pretty straightfoward if you buy a $1 album from iTunes 80% of that goes to record labels and 20% of that is mediator fees and that’s it. 

Whereas in case of subscription, it’s quite difficult because you are giving unlimited access to everyone for a defined fees. So, the revenue distribution itself becomes very very complex. But fortunately the Spotify guys got through it and they spent about $9.8 billion dollars between 2006 to 2018 just to get the music rights without legal issues and they built the freemium model to make music accessible to everyone. And what followed next was the third wave of music streaming that is, unlimited legal music which could be listened for free. As a result of which, again, Spotify exploded and today it is a market leader with the highest number of paid subscribers. But again there were 3 problems.

 Number one, ad revenue was not enough to pay the artists well and because the music is free, very few people actually opted in for a subscription. Number two, there was no profit for Spotify, in fact the company suffered massive losses during its rise. And last and most importantly things got really ugly with the artists. Taylor Swift and Adele broke up with Spotify over low pay. And again it led to a series of troubles for them from the creators’ side. Now, the company was badly cornered. With massive losses on one side annoyed artists on the other and on top of that they’ve now got freebie loving customers. And this gave them no option but to run a lot of ads to push their customers to buy Spotify Premium and hence a lot of interruptions. And this is when ladies and gentlemen 2 more giants decided to step into the game.

 In 2015, Apple introduced that it’s going to kill iTunes and launch the subscription model which was Apple Music as direct competition to Spotify. And in just 5 months, in November 2015, YouTube entered the streaming wars with YouTube Music. Now, if you observe this streaming war very very closely guys, you’ll see that both these services, that is, Apple Music and YouTube Music are built over the weaknesses of Spotify. And with just a few moves here and there Spotify could be killed and there could be another wave of social media revolution on YouTube. The question is- How is that even possible? If you look at this table, Apple Music deploys a premium model and its only for Apple users while Spotify and YouTube Music is for everyone and they use the freemium model which gives them a wider audience. 

Now, if you look at the user base, Apple has 1.65 billion users Spotify has 345 million users and YouTube, well it’s got 2.1 billion users. But when it comes to paid subscription Spotify is way ahead of Apple because of its accessibility through both Android and Apple. While Apple Music has only 72 million users but all of them are paid Spotify has 345 million users out of which 155 million of them pay. Now, the X factor for Spotify over here is its amazing playlists and podcasts that is integrated into the app. And this is where we saw Spotify coming out with Spotify Originals like 22 Yarns and signing up creators like Joe Rogan to become Spotify exclusive. But Apple and YouTube both also have their podcast but separately. YouTube has Google Podcasts and Apple has Apple Podcasts. And now, guys here comes the big difference. 

While Apple Music generates a revenue of $4.1 billion with very less profits because it’s just an ecosystem product Spotify being a standalone incurred a loss of $698 million inspite of generating a revenue of $9.2 billion. And YouTube? Well it’s way ahead of the game with $19.7 billion dollars in revenue and this is mainly because of it’s video service. Fun fact: YouTube is one of the most popular platforms to discover musicians and artists. Now, guys, if you take a step back (I don’t know if you see this) but YouTube can literally accommodate every single X factor of Spotify and Apple Music in the YouTube app itself. Number one You kind of already search for songs through lyrics from Google and YouTube which is the USP of Apple Music. 

Number two, you can ask Google which song is playing and it will find that out for you which is nothing but a Shazam feature. And most importantly Google has Google Podcasts and a huge base of creators who are already making podcast on YouTube. Now, every single creator knows that YouTube is by far the best platform for creating content. And users know very well how well YouTube understands them and their preferences. Now, if YouTube rolls out an update tomorrow saying that Google Podcasts is now integrated into YouTube as YouTube podcasts.

People, always remember that being the first mover can sometimes be a terrible thing and as far as my observation goes it’s almost every time a terrible thing. In this case if you see, iTunes built over Napster Spotify built over iTunes and Apple Music and YouTube music built over Spotify. So, if you’re the first mover, you’ve got to be very very careful and if you’re the second mover you’ve got to be very very happy, at the same time, very very sharp about the mistakes that have been made by the first mover. 

Lesson number two companies might come and go but the behavioral design they leave behind will stay forever. In this case, it was the paradigm shift from CDs to streaming. So, while most people will neglect it and try to reverse it you as an entrepreneur can be an opportunist and can bring about a solution which is forward looking rather than backward looking. In this case the opportunist was none other than the legendary Steve Jobs himself who built upon the behavioral design left behind by Napster.
