Growing vegetables at home

Vegetables are essential part of our food, green leafy vegetables gives us the important nutrients we require to lead a healthy life, but nowadays there is a risk buying vegetables from outside not only does it have a risk of getting exposed to the virus but also it can be filled with inorganic fertilizers and toxic stuffs like preservatives which will actually damage our health.  These harmful chemicals are introduced to increase productivity and longitivtiy of the vegetables and consuming these things causes the chemicals to accumulate inside our body and if it is not stopped it can lead to many diseases. The concept of organic  vegetables was introduced as a solution for this where no synthetic chemicals is used on the plant of the vegetables, but these vegetables costs so much that many people cannot afford it.

There is a better solution to this, if  one has space in their home they can grow vegetables in home, but as we know there are some vegetables which cannot be grown  at home nor some plants can be grown together, maybe in the future some way comes up so that these plants can also be grown. For now the vegetables you can grow are Tomatoes, Radishes, Okra,Ginger, beans  and many more. These can be grown in pots  and require some attention and care, this way of growing vegetables is economical also .

If you are a beginner you should have some tools like

  1. watering can- required to water the plants.
  2. Hand pruners – A type of scissors to cut the weeds.
  3. scoop- used to dig the soil.
  4. Small gardening fork- used for loosening the soil

These are the basic equipments required, but may be no need to buy them as you can make them by using many things in your house, like one can make the watering can by using an old water bottle and making holes on the cap or  for hand pruners one can use the ordinary scissors or can use some spoons or forks for loosening the soil.

You can plant these vegetables by seeds or buying the saplings, and put it in a pot with mud which is loosened well and it is very necessary to make holes on the pot which are also called drainage holes.  One should place the pots where the plants can receive optimum amount of sunlight. Its vey much required that you spend at least 1hour  of your day to water these plants, to cut them properly to check their growth status.

Some tips for different plants

  1. Tomatoes – The tomatoes should be grown in a pot of larger height so as to get sturdy and strong roots. These plants require more sunlight. Do add organic pesticides because insects attack tomatoes much more than other plants
  2. Okra – Do not water it very much as it may lead to fungal diseases
  3. Ginger- plant the root in a wide container and do not cover it with very much soil.

such tips will help you to grow these plants better, one should take care of the plants very much in winter seasons as this season tend to inhibit the growth of these plants, sometimes the plant become dormant. Immense amount of love and some care  required to grow these plants.

PRESERVATION OF FOOD USING DRYING METHOD

Drying or dehydration can be defined as the removal of water from the food by controlled processes, which can be achieved by either of 3 ways –

  1. Evaporation due to heating of the food product
  2. Osmotic dehydration
  3. Sublimation, or freeze drying

Drying can be explained as a 2 stage process in which in the first stage, the surface water removal takes place which totally depends on the state of air surrounding that food particle such as its temperature, relative humidity, and speed. On the other hand in the second stage of the drying, the moisture which is present within the food particle is allowed to move onto the surface which can be then again removed by the process of the first stage.
The rate of drying basically depends on the time that moisture takes to come onto the surface of the food from its inside. Heating of any particle accelerated its time of drying. The shortest time period has been noted in starchy foods.
There are 5 basic methods of drying –

  1. TUNNEL DRYING –
    Many years ago, for the purpose of preservation of agricultural products by the means of drying, a solar tunnel dryer was developed. It is an amazing device which can be used for the hygienic preservation of food and also acts as a good alternative for the seasonal agricultural surplus. Also the foods which are dried using this process are more hygienic and superior rather than other methods.
  2. SOLAR DRYING –
    I t is also known as sun drying and is a method of drying any substance using natural sunlight. This drying technique offers faster drying rates and greater protection of the product. There are several problems or limitations which are associated which this type of drying technique, such as the drying areas must be free of dust and whenever there are chances of a dust storm or rain, the drying process cannot be continued.
    There is also a process known as shade drying which can be carried out for the product which can easily lose their color and turn brown if kept in sunlight i.e. they are non-photosynthetic.
  3. SPRAY DRYING –
    This is a unique technique which ultimately transforms the substrate from a liquid to dried form by spraying the feed into a hot drying medium. It is a continuous process and takes time. The dried products which are ultimately obtained can be in the form of powders, granules or agglomerates. It is a multi-step process.
  4. VACUUM DRYING –
    Since evaporation of water takes place more easily and effectively at lower pressures, so vacuum drying was developed which is faster than the process of evaporation. This is an expensive method and is used for some specific products.
  5. FREEZE DRYING –
    This method uses the process of sublimation, which is a process which directly converts solid particles to their gaseous state, without first melting them. It is a technique which is very used in preserving food at low temperatures because at less temperature, chemical reactions occur very rarely and food is rarely attacked by pathogens. It is also a multi-step process which includes freezing, vacuuming, heating and finally condensation of the product.

Humans and animals have been travelling since ages in search of food and water. Fresh water and Food are required for any person not to be healthy and fit enough to carry his daily day to day routine. We have been able to find various fresh sources of these waters and their origin, and through advancement in technology we have brought them to land directly to our house. We now need not to travel distances in search of water related just turn on the taps and thus we get it anytime anywhere. This truly has transformed human life and has led cities to develop. The source of freshwater is mainly the groundwater which is assumed to be fresh and not contaminated with dust and adulterants. There are possibilities of hard water in some areas due to the geography of particular areas, but still it is drinkable and people can just boil it or just purify it through the RO or Reverse Osmosis process. 

But as we see and acknowledge these water reserves and resources, these are wasted a lot in various processes including technology and manufacturing. Due to which we are facing a lack of water in various parts of the world and has become a worldwide crisis. It is expected that around 5-6 billion people will be living in areas which will lack water resources by 2050. So it’s high time to be involved in the activities to save this essential resource and thus save humanity. 

But the big question which comes into the mind is that we have 3% of drinkable water, what about the rest 97%. “Why Can’t we use it? And What if we make that water clean and salt free, thus 100% drinkable.So what would be the results if we do remove all the salt water or no salt was ever dissolved in these oceans, how would our lives get affected ?” 

First of all what we need to know is how these water resources got salt into them ? It is assumed that since the existence of earth which was about 4.5 billion years ago,  earth was very hot and it took a few years to cool down. Then Around 3.8 billion years ago, the surface of earth got cooler and the vapours in the surrounding or atmosphere turned into liquid state and were fresh enough to drink directly. But sooner it became saltier due to various natural phenomenon especially like rain. Rain brought the carbon content in the air with it and dissolved in the freshwater. This makes the water a bit acidic, thus eroding the rocks. This water then goes into the rivers and streams residing nearby and thus dissolving those salts of rocks in it. Also there were emissions from Volcanoes which dissolved in these rivers and then into oceans. This process continues for another billion years and hence most of the water we do see around is saltier. 

Technologies and research have been followed up with the steps to remove salts from water and thus make it drinkable. So would it be beneficial for us or rather harmful ? 

  1. It is assumed that cleaning up most of these ocean waters by desalination would affect the life inside the sea and oceans. The marine life creatures have evolved to drink and remain hydrated through the salt water present in the surrounding. Cleaning this water will surely lead to death of most of this aqua life. These have evolved as per their surrounding and remove out the extra salt which helps them to survive. 
  2. The underwater algae which is assumed to be spread all around the world, is responsible for absorbing the carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen, which humans require to survive. Thus cleaning of water would affect these plants and would affect our atmosphere, filling it more with the carbon content and less pure and fresh air to breath. 
  3. Increase climate change making some parts of the world extremely hot to live in. Phenomenon like hurricanes and cyclones would get common as the temperature increased and this would help these tropical storms to build up. This surely looks no good for humans as per their survival would surely be at stake. 

“So it can be an option to shift towards these ocean water, make it clean and drink it, but still we should prohibit it from doing it as it can have a devastating effect on the survival of all living beings. We could rather save the resources which are present around us rather than interfering with nature. As we know everything is balanced in nature and if any interference could lead to a phase humans would never want to enter. FOOD SPOILAGE

Food is considered contaminated when unwanted microorganisms are present. Most of the time, the contamination is natural, but sometimes it can be artificial too.
NATURAL CONTAMINATION occurs when microorganisms attach themselves to foods while the foods are in growing stages.
ARTIFICIAL CONTAMINATION occurs when the food is handled or processed such as when fecal bacteria enter food through improper handling procedures.
CAUSES OF FOOD SPOILAGE:

  1. Growth and Activity of microorganisms – Bacteria, yeasts and molds are microorganisms that cause food spoilage. They produce various enzymes that decompose various constituents of food.
  2. Enzyme activity – Action of enzymes start the decomposition of various food components after death of plants and animals.
  3. Chemical reactions – These are the reactions that are not catalyzed by any enzyme. E.g. Oxidation of fats
  4. Vermin – It includes weevils, ants, rats, mice, birds, larval stage of some insects. Vermin are important due to asthetic aspect of their presence, possible transmission of pathogenic agents and consumption of food.
  5. Physical changes – These include changes caused by freezing, burning, drying, pressure etc.
    SOURCES OF FOOD CONTAMINATION. PHYSICAL SPOILAGE is due to physical damage to food during harvesting, processing or distribution. The damage increases the chance of chemical or microbial spoilage and contamination because the protective outer layer of food is broken and microorganisms can enter through it. CHEMICAL SPOILAGE in food are responsible for changes in the color and flavor of foods during processing and storage. After harvesting, chemical changes begin automatically within foods and lead to deterioration. Every living organism uses specialized proteins called enzymes to drive the chemical reactions in its cell. After death, enzymes play an important role in the decomposition of living tissues in a process called as autolysis (self-destruction) or ENZYMATIC SPOILAGE. MICROBIAL SPOILAGE is due to bacteria, yeasts or molds. They produce various enzymes that decompose various constituents of food. • Besides natural microorganisms, foods can be contaminated with different types of microbes coming from outside sources such as air, soil, sewage water, humans, food ingredients, equipments, packages, insects, etc.

The primary sources of microorganisms in food may include –

  1. Soil and Water – Soil grows agricultural produce and raise animals and birds which might contain several microorganisms. Also, these microbes can multiply in soil and their numbers can be even very high as expected. Fecal materials may also contaminate soils which can act as a source of microorganisms. Sewage water can also contaminate crops with variety of microorganisms when sewage water is used as a fertilizer. So, Sewage must be always treated before using as a fertilizer.
  2. Plants and plant products – The inside tissue of food from plant sources are essentially sterile except for few porous vegetables such as radish, onion and cabbage. Also it has been observed that some plants produce natural metabolites that can limit the presence of microorganisms in those particular foods. Fruits and vegetables contain a variety of microorganisms on their surface and their presence and number depends on various factors such as disease of the plant, storage, etc.
  3. Food utensils – Many different microorganisms can contaminate food utensils from which they can transmit to human body and make them ill if pathogenic. Proper cleansing and sanitization of food utensils is required before serving food in them.
  4. Food handlers – Food handler is a person who touches or handles food. The microorganism may be transmitted from his hand to the food and may be harmful for the person consuming that particular food. The microbes can come from animals or from the environment.
  5. Animal hides and skins – Food animals and birds normally carry various indigenous microorganisms some of which are pathogens and are responsible for food-borne diseases in humans. The number of these microorganisms is less than10/g.
  6. Air and dust – Microorganisms may be present in dust and moisture droplets in the air. The microorganisms which are present in air may be transient or variable depending on the environment. Some pathogenic microorganisms may cause air-borne diseases.

Plant based milk is a good option, which includes soy milk  and has equal constituents like those of normal milk. There are other sources like almond, coconut and many more. But there are some other ways to make milk also. Leopons: Hybrids Between Leopards and Lions

Animals all over the world are known to exhibit unnatural behaviors in a typical zoo environment. The pairings which very little off chance of happening in the wild or a natural environment can surely be imagined happening in a zoo. One such pairing is between a lioness and a leopard. In the wild, they both use different mating techniques and would be unlikely to find themselves in a position of compatibility. However, factors change when talking about the same animals in the confined environment of a zoo. They have been successfully bred in captivity to produce a hybrid known as a leopon.

Leopons have been bred in zoos in India, Japan, and Germany. Originally bred for the leopard fur, the hybrid offspring proved to be very sterile. The last of the leopons in India died in 1985, but the British Museum of Natural History still has the leopon skin and skull from an animal bred at the Kolhapur Zoo, India in 1910.

The most successful leopon program was in Nishinomiya City in Japan. Here a lioness named Sonoko was mated to a leopard called Kaneo, both born in 1955 in the Koshien Hanshin Park. The first litter of two leopon cubs was born in 1959 after a gestation period of 97 days. This is an intermediate between the gestation period of a leopard (90 – 95 days) and a lion (105 – 110 days). Usually, in captivity, the big cat males are known to show social behavior and the same happened with Kaneo when he remained with the family after the birth. After this, the couple had three more cubs in 1962.

Leopons are larger in size than leopards and have the combined features of the parents, that is, a lion and a leopard. They have a lion’s stout body while the rest of the appearance resembles a fuzzy leopard with spots and shorter legs. Instead of the classic black spots of a leopard, they have paler brown spots and a reddish-yellow skin. Their tails are tufted like that of a lion while they love to climb trees and play in the water, much like leopards. This distresses the lioness mother as lions are known to hate water. On maturing, the males have a small and sparse mane about 20 centimeters long while the females deal with an internal conflict of having to choose between the solitary lifestyle of a leopard and the social nature of a lioness. Their lifespan is about 20 years, which is more than that of a leopard (12 – 17 years) and that of a lion (10 – 14 years). The lioness mother, leopard father, and leopon offspring were taxidermized and are still on display.

Even though it is very unlikely for such hybrids to occur in a natural state, there still are reports suggesting otherwise. Such a natural hybrid is called a Marozi. As for the case of a reciprocal cross between a male lion and a female leopard, the hybrid is known as a lipard and was last found in Italy.

Solar Eclipse 2020: The moon covering the sun formed a celestial event “Ring of Fire” today, 21 June, being the longest day of year.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. When this happens, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching the earth. What is Ring of Fire?

When solar eclipse occurs, a bright light of Sun is observed around the moon at the height of annual solar eclipse that beautiful ring is called “Ring of Fire”. “ Annular solar eclipse is a particular case of the total solar eclipse. Like the total solar eclipse, the moon is aligned with the sun. However, on that day, the apparent size of the moon happens to be a wee smaller than the sun. Hence the moon covers the central part of the sun, and the rim of the sun appear like a ‘ring of fire’ in the sky for a very brief moment” Samir Dhurde of The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics said.

Today, a beautiful celestial event, an annular solar eclipse, which is popularly known as the “ring of fire” eclipse, was visible on Sunday in parts of India.It has been spotted in Delhi, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Social media and TV news channels were flooded with pictures of beautiful ring by sunlight. This was the first solar eclipse of 2020 which coincided with the Summer Solstice, being the longest day. The import percentage is almost double the amount of export we generally do.This surely defies our dependencies not only on China but also on other countries for more of our products. India lacks in their productivity growth which means the lack of raw material for manufacturing any product. Thus India is dependent on other countries for even the raw material. India along with that does not have better skilled labour due to lack of literacy around the country. This leads to rise of manufacturing cost of products and surely rise in their sale cost also. Which countries like China, have a plus point with. They have highly skilled labour, and due to high populations , work is a priority so they hire these skilled people at much lower cost and thus earn better profits than other international companies. 

Comparing China and also enlisting India’s dependency on it. India is dependent on china for most of its products and  components which include:

  5. And many more raw materials. 

These components and their share is hide in importing from other countries and especially china for cost effectiveness. Along with that all the countries are shifting towards sustainable forms of energy and one of the forms is solar energy, but the interesting fact is that most of the components in it are made in China. 

India technology as compared to China lacked in the time-period along the years as they invested most of their resources in creating resources which India focused on just importing and buying them. Many schemes like Make in India and a recent Atma Nirbhar bharat as launched by Prime minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi, which purely focuses on developing their product and manufacturing most of them india.  The main area we lack is raw material, India to manufacture products has to import most if raw material from other countries especially china. So India should try to shift to some other source for their raw material and on coming years must focus on there technology and production of these raw material and ingredients in our country only. 

It’s hard to believe and accept but yes India is dependent on china for most of its product and boycotting them and this stage could result in high lack of these resources especially in pharmaceutical industry, as many medicine especially paracetamol and ingredients used in it comes from china, so boycotting chinese product and its use could be harmful especially in today’s era if pandemic.

LIGO LASER INTERFEROMETER GRAVITATIONAL WAVE OBSERVATORY:- central building shoots a laser beam and split it perpendicularly by beam splitter in L shaped tubes 4 km long and has mirrors on both the ends. The beam of light then strikes both the mirrors resulting in destructive interference due to the cancellation of their peak alignment but distortion in space-time leads to stretching and squeezing of arms until gravitational waves fully pass the earth. From March to September, the northern hemisphere gets more sunlight than the southern one. June 21 is the day when the northern hemisphere receives the most direct sunlight, which causes the day to last longer than any other day in the year, known as Solar eclipse. This year, the annual solar eclipse will occur on 21 June. According to Time and Date, the eclipse will begin at 9.15 am IST and will end at 15.04 pm. The maximum eclipse will be visible at 12.10 pm. In the Northern Hemisphere, where it is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight, the June solstice is also called the summer solstice.

Why it is the longest day ?, because Since the Earth rotates on the axis, the North of the Equator receives more direct sunlight between the month of March and September, hence Summer is experienced during the time. Is there any effect on humans? yes during the total solar eclipse, the total eclipse may last only a short period of time, and if you are looking towards the sun as the moon moves away from blocking the sun, you might get a solar burn on your retina which can cause permanent damage to your eyes.
