Modi 2.0 Cabinet Expansion 2021

PM Modi 2.0 Reshuffle Cabinet:

The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday expanded its council of ministers, the first such exercise in the third year of his second term. While the cabinet reshuffle was on the cards for a long time, the move comes at a time when the Modi government faces criticism over the alleged mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The list of ministers also indicates that due attention has been given to upcoming assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Day before yesterday, two major political developments took place which indicated that the BJP has started preparing for the polls besides appeasing its allies. In the first development, Thawar Chand Gehlot was appointed Governor of Karnataka to make more space for new ministers. Later in the day, a new ministry was created – the Ministry of Cooperation.

The focus has been on Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. Uttar Pradesh is the most crucial state for the BJP given the number of Lok Sabha seats. The inclusion of the allies like JD(U), Apna Dal etc. indicates that the Modi government is not willing to let go more of its allies since two of its major partners – Shiv Sena and Shiromani Akali Dal had already deserted the NDA over different issues. The move will boost the confidence of its allies and the same will prove beneficial for the saffron party in the coming polls.

Below is the full list of new ministers in Modi Cabinet:

India and the Pandemic

India coronavirus dispatch: How is rural India managing the pandemic? | Business Standard News

Effects of pandemic on India

India, being a growing nation is drastically effected by the pandemic. Not a single area is left untouched by its effect.

Starting from the most affected area which is the tourism sector. With the government imposing complete lockdown in the initial days of pandemic tourism industry almost collapsed. Small business owner were helpless. For all of us this was the first time experience of such a situation we only have read in the history textbooks about the world wars but hardly anyone knows how to face them we were such naïve. Talking about the tourism sector, everyone was very terrified of the pandemic so majority people just shut themselves into their cozy houses till everything was over but not every one have that big a house or the resources to stay home they were the daily wage workers who gets money only when they travel. So they were helpless many people have changed their professions they moved to their respective home town to work in the farms seeing no scope of employment the city.

Other area that was affected was the educational as their was a severe change in the method of teaching from traditional classroom teaching to completely online. It has effected the students mental health very badly.

The entrainment industry is also effected by the pandemic with the crew members starving to earn money as the industry was completely shut down.

Hope,we will learn from this and will save our planet from any such happening in near future.

Math 2.0 day

Today is math 2.0 day, but what exactly does that even mean?.With or without knowing we all use math several times every single day. The subject is also important for the advancement of technology. And thus, to celebrate the combination of maths and technology, Math 2.0 Day is celebrated on July 8. Read on to know other details.

Imagine the way the world used to be viewed! Math as known to be important but not thought to be something you could make a living at and the rising tide of technology was considered a fad! Math 2.0 Day reminds us that technology is here to stay!

Every year, Math 2.0 Day is celebrated on July 8. The day is observed to highlight the importance of the combination of maths and technology. The day was formed to celebrate the achievement made through the combination of maths and technology. Math 2.0 Day also helps to educate the masses about the benefits of maths and technology. Without maths and technology, it would have been impossible for us to achieve the various entertainment mediums we have now.

History of Math 2.0 Day

In 2009, the Math Interest Group formed Math 2.0 Day. Math is extremely important for the advancement of science, technology and education.Math 2.0 Day is a celebration of the blending of technology and mathematics. For a lot of us, math wasn’t a favorite subject, we’d spend the entire period staring at the equations and wondering what sort of livid madman designed these torture chambers on paper. Ultimately, however, we realized that math is utterly indispensable in our modern world. If you’ve ever wondered who uses math in their day to day careers, you aren’t alone and we have some answers for you.

Programmers deal with mathematics every day, as it’s the framework upon which all computer operations are formed. Everything from the order of operations to quadratic equations is necessary to make even the simplest program. Scientists are one of the biggest users of mathematics, whether they’re calculating the statistical variance of their data or figuring out how much to add to their chemistry experiment, it’s involved at every step.

One presumes you live in a house, drive a car, or operate a computer? The engineers responsible for designing those things so that they work, and especially in the case of the house, use math to ensure it doesn’t come crumbling down on your head. Math 2.0 day celebrates all these mathematical heroes and more.

How to celebrate Math 2.0 Day

If you’re like me, you probably have your old math books from college laying around. I suggest busting them open and studying them again. Who knows, in the intervening years you may have secretly developed a love for those dancing numbers. If not, make sure that you stop by those people who use math every day and thank them for doing the work so you don’ thave to.Mathematics is one of the most important fields in the world today, and just about everything we know and love is built on its back.

Homelessness

Can you sleep without a bed, pillow and a blanket? or Can you cook and eat on the streets while passersby stare at you? It’ll be so uncomfortable for you and for everyone of us.
Just take a break and imagine the lives of people who live on streets.
The amount of struggle they go through for the tiniest thing is nothing compared to our lives.

Sleeping on the benches of bustops or under a truck just to save themselves from cold breezes during winter ,to tie tarpaulin sheets in order to avoid getting wet during monsoons and to sleep without electricity during summers.

They earn little money by doing various jobs such as selling small items home to home. As their income is not fixed, the availability of food is not fixed too. Sometimes they might have to spend the night without having food. Due to income insecurity it is very difficult for them to save money.

Healthcare is very difficult for them to obtain due to irregular income and as they are living and eating on the streets, it is more likely for them to catch germs and fall sick frequently. Hygiene is the least thing that matters to them due to non availability of proper food, water, clothes, etc.

Life becomes hard for them each day and have to face new challenges everyday. It’ll be great job if you can offer them a little help by donating some clothes or giving them healthy food and water. Help them in every way you can because every tiny good deed matters.

Friction

We walk on the roads without falling. But, we tend to fall when we walk on wet surfaces. Why? We walk on the roads safely because of the friction between the feet and the road. But, the friction is less when we walk on wet surface and so we tend to fall.

Frictional force on friction arises when two or more bodies in contact move or tend to move, relative to each other. It acts always in the opposite direction of the moving body. This force is produced due to the geometrical dissimilarities of the surface of the bodies, which are in relative motion. Friction can produce the following effects.

Friction opposes motion.
It causes wear and tear of the surfaces in contact.
It produces heat.

TYPES OF FRICTION
Friction can be classified into two basic types:
Static friction and
Kinetic friction

STATIC FRICTION
The friction experienced by the motion of bodies, which are at rest is called static friction.

Example: All the objects are rigidly placed to be at rest on the earth.

KINETIC FRICTION
Friction existing during the motion of bodies is called kinetic friction.

Kinetic friction can be further classified into sliding friction and rolling friction.

When a body slides over the surface of another body, the friction acting between the surfaces in contact is called sliding friction. When a body rolls over another surface, the friction acting between the surfaces in contact is called rolling friction. Rolling friction is less than sliding friction. That is why wheels are provided in vehicles, trolleys, suitcases etc.

FACTORS AFFECTING FRICTION

Some of the factors which affect friction are given below.

NATURE OF A SURFACE
Moving an object on a rough surface will be difficult, but we can easily move it on a smooth surface. It is because, friction varies between the surfaces.

WEIGHT OF THE BODY
It is easy to pedal your cycle without any load on its carrier. With a load placed on its carrier, it is difficult to move it because the weight on the carrier increases the friction between the surface of the tyre and the road.

AREA OF CONTACT
For a given weight, the friction is directly related to the area of contact between the two surfaces. If the area of contact is greater, then, the friction will be greater too.
A road roller has a broad base, so it offers more friction on the road. But, a cycle has the least friction, since the area of contact of the tyre with the surface of the road is less.

ADVANTAGES OF FRICTION
Friction is necessary for our day to day activities. It is desirable in most of the situations of our daily life.

We can hold objects in our hand due to friction.
We can walk on the road because of friction. The friction between footwear and the ground help us to walk without slipping.
Writing on the paper with a pen is easy due to friction.
Automobiles can move safely due to friction between the tyres and the road. Brakes can be applied due to frictional resistance on brake shoes.
We are able to light a matchstick, sew clothes, tie a knot or fix a nail on the wall because of friction.
Through friction makes our life easy, it has some negative effects also. So, it is called as ‘necessary evil’.

DISADVANTAGES OF FRICTION
Friction wears out the surfaces rubbing with each other, like screws and gears in machines or soles of shoes.
An excess amount of effort has to be given to overcome the friction while operating a machine. This leads to wastage of energy.
Friction produces heat, which causes physical damage to the machines.

INCREASING AND DECREASING FRICITION

AREA OF CONTACT
Friction can be increased by increasing the area of the surfaces in contact. For example, brake shoes in a cycle have to be adjusted so that they are as close as possible to the rim of the wheel, in order to increase the friction.

USING LUBRICANTS
A substance which reduces the frictional force is called a lubricant. Example, Grease, coconut oil, graphite, castor oil, etc. the lubricants fill up the gaps in the irregular surfaces between the bodies in contact. This provides a smooth layer thus preventing a direct contact between their rough surfaces.

USING BALL BEARING
Since rolling friction is smaller than sliding friction, sliding is replaced by rolling with the usage of ball bearing. For the same reason, lead shots are used in the bearing of a cycle hub.

Patriotism And Professionalism.

The title can be well explained by the famous fiction The Enemy’ by Pearl Sydenstricker Buck.

About Our Founder - Pearl S Buck

The protagonist, Sadao perfectly balanced patriotism and professionalism. Being a true Jap, he harbored an enemy, the American POW, Tom despite of thinking of the blot of traitor on his identity as a respectable citizen. Sadao. faced a mental and physical toil during the period in which he harbored American POW. He was taken aback, when he failed to receive any support from his servants, who have been with him since his childhood, for they were having old notion and superstition, as well as the fear of the catastrophic results of the presence of the POW within the house. They thought that the gun and sea, who tried to kill the enemy, would definitely take the revenge from them.

Among all this turmoil, Hana was the only person, who abreacted Sadao in his thick and thins, for she washed the American POW after Yumi’s refusal, fed him, nursed him and took care of his petty things and demands. Moreover, Hana, decided to stand with Sadao in any catastrophic situation, which provided a strong mental and emotional support to him.

General, was the another man, who desisted his duties and failed to send his assassins. He due to his illness, failed to depict the patriotism towards the country, and Sadao felt him in palm of his hands.

Despite, of all this turmoil, Sadao was a strong man and a true Jap, who overcame all hurdles in having his duties fairly with honesty and dare.

Unsolved mysteries of all time

Is there Treasure in the Oak Island?

Oak Island located on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada has been an attraction for treasure Hunters since the late  1700s. It was rumoured that Captain Kidds treasure has been buried in the Oak Island. With a little evidence found in the early excavation peoples started to publish stories and documents in 1856. The original Searchers spot on the island which attracts the Treasure Hunters called ‘The Money pit’

Money pit

Theories about the artefact that are present on the island range from pirate treasure to  Shakespearean manuscripts, to possibly the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant, with the Grail and the Ark.The items found on the surface have been carbon dated and found to be hundreds of years old. However, no item such as treasure has been found in the excavation. ‘The curse’ said that 7 men will die in the search of the treasure and after their death the treasure will be found.Six men have died till now.

More than 50 books have been written on the hidden treasure but no confirmed treasure has been found still. A television series ‘Curse of the Oak Island ‘ is based on the treasure search .Humans are still in search of the treasure of the oak island.

Disappearance of the Malaysian Flight 370

While flying from Malaysia to China on 8th March 2014 the Malaysian flight 370 carrying 239 passengers and crew members got lost into thin air. A multinational search was carried out which was the largest search in the history of aviation.A lot of conspiracy theories were developed .Nothing of the ship was found except some pieces of aircraft debris.

the passengers of the flight

The prime minister of Malaysia said nothing other than the disappearance of the flight over the Indian ocean.Theories includes hijacking, capture by the united nations or the crew suicide ,fire aboard the aircraft, alien abduction, meteor strike or entry into the sea.Almost after 6 years now and expenditures of millions of dollars in search of the flight, the disappearance of the flight and the 239 passengers still remains a mystery unsolved.

Mary Celeste ship

On 4th December 1872 the ship Mary Celeste was found deserted in the Atlantic ocean with no human onboard and a lifeboat missing. The ship had left New York on 7th November 1872 and when found was in proper sail worthy condition with everything intact. The belonging of the crew members was also undisturbed. None of the people who were on board were ever seen or heard again.  The ship was captained by Benjamin briggs who went on board with his wife and a 2 year old daughter. Brigges chose his crew with great care. The last log written on the ship was 10 day before the ship was found by a Canadian brigantine Dei Gratia .

mary celeste

Mary Celeste was built in Spencer’s  Island  and launched under British administration as Amazon in 1861. She was transferred to American ownership and registration in 1868, when she acquired her new name. Thereafter she sailed eventually, until her 1872 voyage. At the hearings in Gibraltar following her recovery, the court’s officers considered various possibilities of foul play, including fraud  by Mary Celeste’s crew, piracy by the Dei Gratia crew or others, and conspiracy to carry out insurance or  fraud. However ,no convincing evidence supporting  these theories were found.

Hypotheses  include the effects on the crew of alcohol fumes rising from the cargo, submarineearthquake, watersports,  attack by a giant squid or sea monsters, and paranormal intervention. A lot of false story about the ship were rumoured and films,  plays and novels were written about the ship .After the hearing the ship was taken back to work under her new owner until 1885 when it was taken off coast. The mystery about the  missing crew members and the ship being deserted is still unexplained.

Asset Bubble

What Is a Bubble?

A bubble is an economic cycle that is characterized by the rapid escalation of market value, particularly in the price of assets. This fast inflation is followed by a quick decrease in value, or a contraction, that is sometimes referred to as a “crash” or a “bubble burst. Typically, a bubble is created by a surge in asset prices that is driven by exuberant market behavior. During a bubble, assets typically trade at a price, or within a price range, that greatly exceeds the asset’s intrinsic value (the price does not align with the fundamentals of the asset). The cause of bubbles is disputed by economists; some economists even disagree that bubbles occur at all (on the basis that asset prices frequently deviate from their intrinsic value). However, bubbles are usually only identified and studied in retrospect, after a massive drop in prices occurs.

How a Bubble Works

An economic bubble occurs any time that the price of a good rises far above the item’s real value. Bubbles are typically attributed to a change in investor behavior, although what causes this change in behavior is debated. Bubbles in equities markets and economies cause resources to be transferred to areas of rapid growth. At the end of a bubble, resources are moved again, causing prices to deflate.

The Japanese economy experienced a bubble in the 1980s after the country’s banks were partially deregulated. This caused a huge surge in the prices of real estate and stock prices. The dot-com boom, also called the dot-com bubble, was a stock market bubble in the late 1990s. It was characterized by excessive speculation in Internet-related companies. During the dot-com boom, people bought technology stocks at high prices—believing they could sell them at a higher price—until confidence was lost and a large market correction occurred.

The research of American economist Hyman P. Minsky helps to explain the development of financial instability and provides one explanation of the characteristics of financial crises. Through his research, Minsky identified five stages in a typical credit cycle. While his theories went largely under-the-radar for many decades, the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008 renewed interest in his formulations, which also help to explain some of the patterns of a bubble.

Displacement

This stage takes place when investors start to notice a new paradigm, like a new product or technology, or historically low interest rates. This can be basically anything that gets their attention.

Boom

Prices start to rise. Then, they get even more momentum as more investors enter the market. This sets up the stage for the boom. There is an overall sense of failing to jump in, causing even more people to start buying assets.

Euphoria

When euphoria hits and asset prices skyrocket, it could be said that caution on the part of investors is mostly thrown out the window.

Profit-Taking

Figuring out when the bubble will burst isn’t easy; once a bubble has burst, it will not inflate again. But anyone who can identify the early warning signs will make money by selling off positions.

Panic

Asset prices change course and drop (sometimes as rapidly as they rose). Investors want to liquidate them at any price. Asset prices decline as supply outshines demand.

Living Life Intentionally

People, especially those in young adulthood or in their middle ages, often find themselves questioning their life and purpose. You might find yourself wondering, what am I doing? Or, what should I do? The answer to these questions differs from person to person, and what it means to live intentionally also varies depending on the person. In case an individual is not able to find an answer to these, there can be a certain discomfort or disappointment as they feel lost and without purpose. However, there is a basic framework that can be adhered to which helps everyone one of us live intentionally.

Some important qualities

Firstly, we must learn to nurture wisdom in ourselves. Wisdom means that we are able to recognise what is good for us, what is bad for us, and what we are indifferent to. It is easy to understand what is good for you, like honesty, kindness, empathy, and what is bad for you like, dishonesty, greed, jealousy. In the indifferent category come the things that are not completely good or bad, like money, success, possessions, etc. You should not be too worried about whether you have a lot of these things or not, as they do not define your life’s worth.

Next there is temperance, which includes things like self-restraint, self-discipline and self-control. It is about balancing the short-term gains with the things that are good for us in the long-term. It also means that there should be moderation in all things, whether that be eating, watching TV or even working. Learning to exhibit self-control in your life and work towards things that provide long-term rewards rather than instant gratification will work wonders in your life. The classic example of this is exercise, which does not have any immediate results unless we are disciplined and stick to it, and after a while the hard work will show.

Following this is courage, which is not the elimination of fear or anxiety, but rather feeling the fear and anxiety and still acting in the right way. Courage is perhaps one of the most important qualities in life in general. When we are afraid of something, we should try to deal with that fear directly by leaning into it rather than running away from it. This is a display of courage. For example, if someone is scared of jumping in the water, the best way to overcome this fear is to simply jump without thinking about it too much. It is the same in case we have to make a difficult decision in life, but we are afraid of making it. Being courageous means we make the decision despite the fear behind it.

Lastly there is the virtue of justice. This is not to mean justice like in our legal system or jurisprudence. Rather it means our duty to the society and to our fellow man. So, if we want to live intentionally, we also have to live in ways that are beneficial to other people. This implies being caring and considerate of people around us. Justice also means doing the right things whenever we can, which is called being righteous. Righteousness helps us in living fulfilling and happy lives, free from feelings of greed or anger. An example for this could be if you see someone drop money, would you act in service of yourself and be greedy (pick it up and take it) or be righteous and just (pick it up and return it). The latter should be the one to aim for.

Conclusion

Hence, it can be concluded that living life intentionally may mean different things to different people, but there are certain qualities we can follow to help in our search for meaning. It is important to highlight here that there is a difference between happiness and meaning. Happiness occurs at points in our life for short periods, while meaning enlightens our whole life and gives us direction. Every person’s meaning in life may be different, but it serves the same purpose, which is to give us purpose. So, finding meaning in our lives will help us to live intentionally, and will also help us to become overall better people.

AI for better Customer Service

Artificial Intelligence is becoming commonplace across major industries and retail is no exception. The retail industry is looking for ways to keep up with the times and many companies have started implementing AI technology across the entire product and service cycle – from assembly to post-sale customer service interactions.Major retailers such as Walmart, Sephora, Walgreens, North Face, Uniqlo, West Elm, and Macy’s are using AI to enhance customers’ experiences at their stores while also improving security. AI Applications in Retail While hardware giant Lowe’s uses small robots to give directions and help customers navigate a large hardware store, Walgreens is using technology to track the spread of flu, based on the locations of customers picking up prescriptions so they can alert customers to the flu activity in their area and stock more flu-related products.Another example is makeup company Sephora, which now uses AI technology in many of its stores to scan customers’ faces and help them choose the perfect shade of blush, lipstick, or eyeliner without having to test multiple products.Meanwhile, a Walmart store in New York is becoming the “store of the future” by incorporating the latest AI technology. The store’s smart cameras will have the capability to alert workers when items are out of stock and even let them know when a bunch of bananas has gone bad. Providing a Customizable Retail Experience Artificial intelligence is being used for everything from preparing packages in warehouses to enhancing security to creating a customized experience for consumers. One company that is delivering solutions to retail and security is VSBLTY Groupe Technologies Corp.(CSE:VSBY) (OTC:VSBGF). VSBLTY is at the forefront of making AI work in the retail space, developing innovative facial recognition software and interactive digital screens that will provide retailers with a multitude of AI features.VSBLTY’s VisionCaptor content management system brings interactive messages to any digital screen and provides insights on customer demographics and emotional states, allowing engagement with consumers in real time.By commanding guests’ attention with dynamic digital displays, custom content can be provided based on what the display camera “sees,” while gaining valuable insights in real time. Through engaging digital assets such as animations, photos, videos, and multimedia content, VSBLTY software creates a complete customer experience through digital displays, which can be utilized in transit hubs, entertainment and sports venues, grocery stores, drug stores and, really, any retail environments. What’s more, VSBLTY’s VisionCaptor can be integrated with other technologies, including RSS feeds, QR codes, and Bluetooth.”Using Edge- and/or Cloud-enabled digital display solutions, retailers can now enhance guest experience with proximity-aware, interactive brand messaging triggered by demographic, identity or even sentiment, while simultaneously gaining groundbreaking levels of measurement and actionable insights,” according to the company’s website. Offering Enhanced Security Features VSBLTY has also developed AI solutions that enhance security.VSBLTY Vector is focused on security solutions that combine video screens with facial recognition software and criminal databases in order to identify “persons of interest” or individuals carrying weapons. Cameras are embedded in screens and can identify individuals alone or in crowds more effectively than overhead cameras, and can allow for demographic and emotional recognition as well as facial and object recognition.By teaching computers how to skillfully interpret their surroundings, VSBLTY software can contextualize all of the information about those surroundings and deliver it to the end-user vetted and streamlined for the particular security application.

Story Review-The Three Questions

Introduction

Short story “The three question” is written by Leo Tolstoy, is a parable.
Theme of the story is wisdom, knowledge, awareness, kindness,
forgiveness and acceptance. It is a very motivational story to read I
would recommend to read it once.
Summary
The story revolves around a king who wants to find answers to his three
most important questions in life. He gathers many wise men of his
kingdom to answer his question but every one differs in their answer and
none of the answers satisfied king. So, he goes to a saint in search for
answers and got some of most important life lessons their.
The three questions were
What is the right time to begin something?
Which people should he listen to?
What is the most important thing for him to do?
I think the purpose of the story was to reminds people to be mindful and
live in the present as it is the only time we have any control over. And the
writer was very much successful in achieving that purpose.
Leo Tolstoy, always brings a story that people will probably like and
that’s why I am very thankful for him because he wrote us another good,
beautiful and interesting story. In this story Motive of life is explained
very wisely in just few pages.
Conclusion
Lesson learned-You should not go ask other people to decide for what
you are going to do because in the end it’s still you who will answer
everything, in the end it’s your decision.
In the story I can quite relate to the king because I often ask other people
before actually doing something which now I think is bad. It just shows
that you don’t believe in yourself. If there is one character here in this
story whom I am really love, it is the saint. I liked him for being full of
wisdom. I liked everything he answered. It really proved that elders are
really more experienced and logical about things in life; they are full of
wisdom.

Mental Health

About-Mental Health has to be one of the most important issue that whole world is facing right now, but you know who is silently facing it, yes they are so called cool teens. who always love to over exaggerate their life. They always love to compare their life with others, buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like, and ironically their parents who have raised them are complaining about their behavior.I think mental health is very much linked with your nature like whether you are introvert, extrovert.

Mental health quotes type Royalty Free Vector Image
  • suppose,if you are extrovert you will not think that much about something like an introvert.
  • If you are introvert I think the whole problem lies their, they too good for this cruel world where everyone is thinking about themself.

How to tackle Negativity

  • First of all if you want to change the world you need many sources such as money, power without money and power you can,t do anything over here so work day and night to get as much money as you can and then raise your voice against any injustice and in this process of having a aim you can keep yourself away from negativity.
  • Every much has got so much to say, but rarely they listen.
  • Listen to online video of famous motivational speaker.
  • And never compare your day-1 at something to somebody’s day-1000,you can’t compare your life to anybody, and for god-sake stop using social media and stop giving it that much importance,it will ruin you ,if you cannot handle it properly.

Cool down your quarantine

As the coronavirus pandemic rapidly turned the “new normal” household into hubs for all daily activities, Summer 2020 now means moving parents’ offices, kid’s camps, vacation destinations, and virtually everything under one roof.Although this dynamic could forge family bonds, it can also ignite the already heated stresses and struggles facing many Americans during this difficult time – making optimal home climate control a critical key to keeping their cool as temperatures heat up this season.Recent studies show how our increased togetherness can significantly disrupt domestic bliss. In fact, research suggests that people forced to live in quarantine conditions face a greater risk of anxiety, depression, anger, irritability, insomnia and post-traumatic stress symptoms. And, despite feeling close to their children during the pandemic, 61percent of parents say they have shouted, yelled, or screamed at them at least once over the past two weeks, according to a University of Michigan study. Further, married and engaged couples in quarantine are fighting more, with only 18 percent of surveyed couples reporting satisfaction in communication with their partner, according to a survey conducted by the publication, “The Knot and app Lasting.”When temperatures – and tempers – rise, a dreaded “Family Thermostat War” can ensue. Following are some useful tips to help you save money on utility bills and keep your family cool. With home heating and cooling accounting for nearly half of home energy use and air conditioner energy expenses costing homeowners more than $11 billion a year, small steps can go a long way.* Ease Into Electric: According to Columbia University’s Earth Institute, electric systems are a solution to decarbonize home climate control. Among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling products, electricity-powered ductless mini-split systems, offered by companies including Fujitsu General America, can save as much as 25 percent on your energy bill. Mini-splits use thin copper tubing to pump refrigerant from an outdoor compressor directly into an indoor air-handling unit, where the air is quietly distributed to the interior space.* Get “Smart” About Climate Control: When it comes to smart home temperature control, there are Smart HVAC Systems and Smart Thermostats. Smart HVAC systems have built-in Internet capability and can be controlled directly without additional equipment. Smart Home Thermostats create “smart” systems by enabling remote temperature control via a mobile or Internet-connected device or voice-operated home automation system.* Voice Your Preference: Take control of your comfort. Most HVAC manufacturers offer apps that enable systems to be controlled from anywhere using a mobile device. Voice-control capability uses digital assistants, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home, to verbally dictate home temperatures. Easily controlling the temperature more closely allows homeowners to be more comfortable and improve energy savings.* Find Your Efficient Comfort Zone: Many of us live in homes designed for bigger families, but have yet to downsize. If you find yourself using a fraction of your home on a regular basis, consider upgrading to a zoned, ducted, or ductless system. That will allow you to save energy heating and cooling spaces where you and your family don’t spend a lot of time. Astronomers Detect a Lurking Cosmic Cloud, Bigger Than The Entire Milky Way.

In the yawning vacuum of intergalactic space, something large is lurking.

Not a galaxy, although it’s of a comparable size: A vast cloud of hot, faintly glowing gas, bigger than the Milky Way, in the space between galaxies congregating in a huge cluster.

Scientists believe this cloud may have been unceremoniously stripped from a galaxy in the cluster, the first gas cloud of this kind we’ve ever seen. Even more surprisingly, it hasn’t dissipated, but has remained clumped together for hundreds of millions of years.

This not only tells us something new about the environments inside galaxy clusters, it suggests a new way to explore and understand these colossal structures.

“This is an exciting and also a surprising discovery. It demonstrates that new surprises are always out there in astronomy, as the oldest of the natural sciences,” said physicist Ming Sun of the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Galaxy clusters are, as the name suggests, groups of galaxies that are bound together gravitationally. The galaxy cluster where our ‘orphan’ gas cloud was found is called Abell 1367, or the Leo Cluster, around 300 million light-years away. It contains at least 72 major galaxies, and makes up part of a larger, supercluster complex.

Such environments often have a lot going on, and astronomers like to peer into them to try and figure out how our Universe is connected. In 2017, astronomers using Japan’s Subaru Telescope spotted what appeared to be a small, warm cloud in Abell 1367; since its origin was unclear, they went back with more instruments to take a closer look.

A team led by astronomer Chong Ge of the University of Alabama in Huntsville used the ESA’s XMM-Newton X-ray telescope and the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope, in addition to Subaru – and, to their surprise, they found X-ray emission showing the cloud was larger than they first thought.

Much larger, in fact – bigger than the Milky Way galaxy, with a mass around 10 billion times that of the Sun. And it didn’t seem to be associated with any known galaxy in the cluster. It was just drifting there. But the wealth of data allowed the researchers to take the the temperature of the gas, in turn providing clues as to its provenance.

The cloud’s temperature ranges between 10,000 and 10,000,000 Kelvin – consistent with gas that can be found within galaxies, the interstellar medium. The much more tenuous hot gas of the intracluster medium (the space between galaxies in the cluster) is hotter still, at around 100 million Kelvin.

This suggests that the cloud of gas was stripped from a galaxy as it moved through space.

“The gas in the cloud is removed by ram pressure of the hot gas in the cluster, when the host galaxy is soaring in the hot gas with a velocity of 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers [620 to 1,240 miles] per second,” Sun said.

“It is like when your hair and clothes are flying backward when you are running forward against a strong headwind. Once removed from the host galaxy, the cloud is initially cold and is evaporating in the host intracluster medium, like ice melting in the summer.”

This is fascinating, but kind of weird – because the researchers couldn’t find any nearby galaxies that could account for this occurring recently. Yet, if the gas had been ripped from its galaxy hundreds of millions of years prior, as this lack of proximity suggested, how had it not been diffused into the intracluster medium?

To work this out, the team performed calculations, and found that a magnetic field could hold the gas cloud together against the instabilities that ought to otherwise tear it apart, for long periods of time.

Given the high mass of the cloud, the team has inferred that the parent galaxy from which it was torn was a large and massive one. This could help them track down which galaxy it was; another clue could be traces of gas that extend from the cloud, which might point in the right direction.

In addition, now that one lonely cloud has been identified, scientists have a set of data that will help to identify other such clouds in the future. This will provide valuable information about intracluster dynamics, and the distribution of matter in galaxy clusters.

Plus, we now have observational evidence that the intracluster medium can divest galaxies of their gas.

“As the first isolated cloud glowing in both the H-alpha spectral line and X-rays in a cluster of galaxies, it shows that the gas removed from galaxies can create clumps in the intracluster medium, and these clumps can be discovered with wide-field optical survey data in the future,” Sun said.

Inside a Hijack: The Story Of Neerja Bhanot
Neerja Bhanot

Neerja Bhanot, the braveheart flight attendant was never one to run away from a crisis

Flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, an ardent Rajesh Khanna fan, often found herself dreaming up scenarios in which she played a role. For one such hypothetical situation, she asked her mother to suggest a plan of action in case of a hijack.

Her mother told her, “Agar aisa kuch hua toh bhaag jaana (If something like this ever happens, escape).”

To which a confident Neerja replied, “Mummy, tumhari jaisi maa hongi toh desh ka kya hogaMar jayungi lekin bhagungi nahin” (If all mothers think like you, then what will happen to the country? I’d rather die than run away).”

Those words came true on 5 September 1986 when Bhanot died while saving passengers on Pan Am Flight 73, which had been hijacked during a stopover in Karachi.

But, the ‘Heroine of the Hijack’ had seen her share of troubles already.

Born to Harish and Rama Bhanot on 7 September 1963 in Chandigarh, she was the darling of her family, which included two brothers, all of whom called her their ‘lado’. She studied in Chandigarh and later in Mumbai, which was where she became a model, endorsing brands like Binaca toothpaste, Forhans and Godrej.

At the age of 19, she was married to a marine engineer and moved to Sharjah, UAE. After two months of abuse, including starvation, verbal taunts and threats, Bhanot left her husband, returned to Mumbai and decided to become a flight attendant.

Bhanot was appointed the senior flight purser on Pan Am Flight 73 flying from Mumbai to the United States on that fateful September day.

During its stopover in Karachi, four armed Palestinian men belonging to the Abu Nidal Organisation hijacked the aircraft, which was carrying around 380 passengers and 13 crew members. Bhanot quickly alerted the cockpit crew by using the hijack code, which allowed the American pilots to escape and thus, ground the plane.

The enraged hijackers ordered her to collect the passengers’ passports. Sensing that the hijacker’s key targets were Americans, Bhanot and her crew hid those passports under the seats and in the trash chute.

Her calming presence also, it is said, kept the passengers’ and crew members’ anxieties in control for 17 hours as she served sandwiches and beverages and tried to boost their morale, even as the terrorists killed a passenger and threw him out of the plane.

When the hijackers eventually decided they had had enough and opened fire, Bhanot worked fast to evacuate as many passengers as she could via the emergency exit. She was shot dead as she shielded three American children from the terrorists.

Out of the 44 Americans on board, 42 were saved owing to Bhanot’s presence of mind. The survivors of the attack conferred the monicker ‘Heroine of the Hijack’ upon her.

Bhanot’s legacy

Bhanot’s calm courage and quick instincts led to a slew of posthumous awards, including the Ashoka Chakra — India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. She was the first woman and youngest recipient of the award. Her citation states: “Her loyalties to the passengers of the aircraft in distress will forever be a lasting tribute to the finest qualities of the human spirit.”

Her story continues to inspire young women, and in order to commemorate her courage, Bhanot’s family used the funds from Pan Am to set up the Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust. The trust recognises Indian women who overcome social injustice and airline crew members who go beyond the call of duty in a crisis.

Among other honours, Bhanot was conferred with the Tamgha-e-Insaniyat award by Pakistan, and in 2004, the Indian Postal Service released a stamp in her memory.

In 2016, Ram Madhvani directed a biopic starring Sonam Kapoor as Neerja. The biopic is a stylised thriller with a few lovely glimpses into Bhanot’s personal life, especially her relationship with her mother (played by Shabana Azmi). The film, too, won a number of awards, including the National Award for the Best Feature Film in Hindi.
