The strongest asset of this film is the character commitment. From DiCaprio, to Ruffalo, to Ben Kingsley – they draw us into this sense of fear and irrationality needed to carry the intrigue the film requires. One that when viewed a second time, you wish you picked up the clues along the way during your first. ⁣

The Courier

Based on the true life of Grenville Wynne, this thrilling dramatic, cold-war era spy film does not need to exaggerate to impress. Benedict Cumberbatch’s nervy performance makes him the perfect actor to be casted for this role. His journey from an everyday salesman to a courier for the US Government divides the film into two halves, the latter half darker and more intense. Required however to evoke the trauma and angst the moments deserve.  ⁣

Psychological Disorders Part 4

Introduction

In Psychological Disorders Part 3, Dissociative and Somatic Symptom Disorders were discussed. These are the fewer known disorders yet very interesting to know about. (Trigger Warning: this article talks about eating disorders)

Eating Disorders

These disorders arise because of obsessive concern over weight which results in a disruptive eating pattern that then affects the person’s physical and mental health.

Anorexia Nervosa is also commonly known as anorexia which is an eating disorder wherein the person has an abnormally low body weight accompanied by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of their weight. People with this disorder tend to take extreme measures to control their weight such as restricting their food consumption. The distorted image of the body can be a result of depression, anxiety, or emotional trauma. The physical symptoms are severe weight loss, dehydration, insomnia, weakness, dizziness, constipation, breaking hair, dry skin, bluish tinge to fingers, absence of menstruation, irregular heartbeat, and inability to tolerate cold. Some behavioural symptoms are eating only low-calorie food, trying to hide their body with baggy and loose clothes, skipping meals, avoiding situations where they have to eat, avoiding situations where they might have to show their body, and extreme exercising. Some emotional symptoms are poor self-esteem, agitation, depression, social isolation, and anxiety.

Bulimia Nervosa is also commonly known as bulimia is a serious and life-threatening eating disorder. People with this disorder secretly binge eat large amounts of food without any control over how much they are eating, then they panic and purge to get rid of those extra calories. There are two types of bulimia, purging and non-purging bulimia. To get rid of these extra calories, they use different methods such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, weight-loss supplements, people with purging bulimia use these methods whereas people with non-purging bulimia follow strict dieting or excessive exercise. The physical symptoms can be life-threatening, some of these symptoms are weight fluctuation of 2 to 10 kgs in a week, bloodshot eyes which means eyes with busted blood vessels, chapped lips because of dehydration, scars on the knuckles from inducing vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, and mouth sensitivity because of receding gums and eroding tooth enamel. Some behavioural symptoms are consistent worry about weight and appearance, going to the bathroom right after eating, eating till it is uncomfortable, excessive exercising, not eating in front of others and restricting calories. The emotional symptoms of bulimia are the same as for anorexia.

The DSM-5 has moved the eating disorder of infants and children to the same category. Rumination Disorder is also known as rumination syndrome and it usually occurs in babies and people with developmental disabilities. Children and adults who have high levels of stress have a greater risk of having this disorder. This is a feeding and eating disorder in which the undigested food comes back up from the person’s stomach to their mouth. The symptoms for this are regurgitating on a regular basis, dental problems, chapped lips, weight loss, and digestive problems.

Pica is an eating disorder in which people eat non-food items like clay, dirt, and flaking paint. This disorder is more common in children but can also occur in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The symptoms for this are upset stomach, bowel problems like constipation or diarrhea, stomach pain, and blood in the stool. If the consumption of non-food items continues, symptoms like lead poisoning, injuries to teeth, infections, and intestinal blockage can occur.

Binge-Eating Disorder (BED) is a feeding and eating disorder in which people eat a large amount of food in a short amount of time even if they might not be hungry. This can be triggered by emotional stress. The person may feel a sense of relief during the binge but will feel shame afterward. The symptoms are eating to a point that is uncomfortably full, eating more rapidly than normal, feeling of disgust with oneself, eating large amounts without feeling hungry, and eating alone because of feeling embarrassed.

Conclusion

It is difficult to figure out what causes these eating disorders but medical experts believe it is a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Genetics plays a role, if you have a family member who suffers from one, you are more likely to be diagnosed with the same. Emotional well-being plays a huge role, people who have experienced trauma or other mental health conditions are more likely to develop one. And finally, societal pressure plays another big role, the western ideal of body image has equated thinness with success and so people try to achieve thinness. If you have any eating disorder, it is important to know it is not your fault and you need to consult a psychologist immediately to get better.

Movies From The Past – 1

Sense And Sensibility

Unraveling the plight of women in both love and money in the 19th century, this 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility ignites the pull between heart and head. China’s three child policy

Earlier In china, one child policy was there which began in 1980 and was severely enforced until January 2016 when it was replaced by two-child policy. 

China’s Communist Party Politburo meeting, headed by President Xi Jinping, declared on May 31,2021 that each couple in the nation will be allowed to have up to three children, a significant increase from the previous two-child restriction.

It was in response to the findings of the 2020 census, after Chinese mothers gave birth to just 12 million kids in 2020 and the global population increased to 1.412 billion in 2020 from 1.4 billion the previous year. 

So therefore, As officials strive to resolve the country’s long-term demographic imbalances, Chinese couples will now be permitted to have up to three children. Supporting measures are also proposed which aims at easing the financial strain of raising children, including educational and housing expenditures. However, Existing exceptions to family planning, such as the lack of birth restrictions for some ethnic minority groups, remain in force. Couples that have more children than they are allowed risk significant fines, as well as unofficial consequences such as job loss, especially for those in the public sector.

Policymakers also stated that with addressing housing and school expenses they will also enhance maternity leave regulations, in order to reduce the costs of having children. But, administration made no specific promises on these topics, but did state that it would “protect the legitimate rights and interests of women in the workplace.” 

The question now is why did the government modify the regulations in the first place. The Beginning of the Modern Age

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Western Europe underwent dramatic changes in the political,Social, cultural, religious and economic spheres. The Holy Roman Empire and the Roman church became weak and discredited. In their place nation states,new Churches that emphasized individual faith, and a commercial revolution based on mercantilism emerged. The modern era was characterized by freedom of thought, individualism, rationalism, and economic and scientific progress. let us look at the changes ushered in by the Renaissance, Reformation and Geographical Discoveries.

1. Renaissance

With the coming of the scholars and artists from Constantinople there was a surge of enthusiasm and interest in studying classical literature and art of Greeks and Romans in the Italian city States. This creative upsurge was reflected in their writings, art, Architecture and music. This cultural florescence is known as the renaissance. The origin of the world renaissance is from the Italian word renascita meaning rebirth. Greek scholar Manuel Chrysoloras who taught Greek classics in Italy, Guarino and Giovanni Aurispa, to name just a few, visited Constantinople several times to collect Greek manuscripts. Later they printed what they collected. This provided stimulus to the flowering of renaissance.

Why Italy became the birth place of Renaissance?

Italian city-states such as Florence,Milan, Venice, and Rome profited immensely from the Mediterranean trade. This led to the emergence of a rich and vibrant urban culture. The rich families of these city States such as Medicis of Florence patronized literature, art and music. The highpoint of this period was between 1475 A.D.(C.E) and 1525 A.D.(C.E). Italian universities taught humanities viz., linguistic, grammar, rhetoric, history, science and ethics, which prepared the students for public life, commerce and administration. The study of humanities was so popular in Italian University that students from all over Europe flocked there. Classical Greek and Latin literature introduced the  idea of Humanism which got reflected in the paintings, sculptures, architecture,music and writings of that period.

Humanism in Literature

The idea of  humanism was first expressed in literature. The humanists were critical of medieval ideas and institutions and greatness. Petrarch (1304 – 1374 A.D.(C.E)) was the first to adopt ideas of classical humanism in his works and is therefore called the Father of Humanism. Dante, influenced by the classics, wrote Divine comedy. Machivelli wrote a political treatise called The Prince. In this book, he wrote about the virtues that a ruler should possess. He declared that a ruler should possess. He declared that a ruler should be Lion and Fox in one. For him, the end was more important than means. Erasmus (1466-1536 A.D.(C.E)), known as the Prince among Humanists, wrote In praise of Folly, a satirical work on the activities and rituals of the Church. Sir Thomas more of England wrote Utopia,a satire on the political evils of his time. Cervantes of Spain wrote Don Quixote, another satire on Medieval chivalry and valour.

Impact on Art

Renaissance paintings and sculptures were realistic and naturalistic. They improved over Medieval paintings and sculptures which were stylized, unrealistic and two dimensional. They portrayed natural landscapes,human anatomy,emotions and ideas.

Mona lisa

In the field of art ,great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael dominated the scene and produced some of the finest artistic works. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519 A.D.(C.E)) was a versatile genius. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, millitary engineer, anatomist, and poet. His paintings of Mona Lisa(La Giaconda), The last supper and The virgin on the Rocks are illustrious examples of his talent.

Madonna

Michelangelo (1475-1564 A.D. (C. E)) was a painter, sculpture of David depicts the youthful strength and energy of the giant Slayer. He is also famous for his paintings in the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Raphael (1483-1520 A.D. (C.E)) painted beautiful Madonnas . His painting of the school of Athens reveals the ideological debate of his times, namely,the conflict between spiritualism and humanism.

Science during Renaissance

The advances in science were inspired by Ptolemy, Archimedes,Euclid and others of the classical period. In the medieval period the Aristotelian view that earth was the centre of the universe strengthened the Church’s view of creation and its own centrality to mankind. The impact of renaissance was profound and far-reaching. Its most important contribution was the idea of humanism. It marked a definite shift towards individualism, secularism and nationalism
The introduction and practice of writing in the vernacular, starting from Dante, enriched the growth of vernacular languages which in turn provided the intellectual basis for the rise of nation-states . Renaissance made a beginning in criticizing the corrupt and worldly practices of the Church. Erasmus and Thomas More indirectly encouraged the reformation movement.
The curiosity kindled by the remaining played a decisive role in the discovery of new land routes and remapping of the world. The spirit of adventurism and quest for knowledge impelled the Mariners to sail into the high seas.
Similarly, inquisitiveness and empiricism of renaissance combined with knowledge of the classical science led to new inventions in science-Copernican revolution in astronomy and Willam Harvey’s contribution to human anatomy.
