Features of a Healthy Lifestyle

What is healthy
lifestyle?

A healthy lifestyle, put simply, is a way of life that
lowers your risk of developing serious illnesses or shortens your life
expectancy. Many dangerous illnesses can be averted by adopting certain
practices and avoiding others, even though we cannot completely prevent all
diseases.

What are the essential
features of a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy diet

 • Eating a variety of foods in the right amounts and
sticking to a calorie intake that supports maintaining a healthy body weight
are both components of a balanced diet. Although everyone’s situation is
different, as a basic guideline, this should contain:

• A third of your daily dietary intake should consist of at
least five pieces of fruit and vegetables. According to data, those who achieve
this threshold have a lower risk of some malignancies and heart conditions.

• Starchy foods, especially those made with whole grains,
which have higher fibre and nutritional contents than white grains. Whole
grains have been found to support good gut bacteria and lower the risk of a
number of malignancies, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

• Lean proteins are crucial for cellular repair and offer a
variety of vitamins and minerals, notably fish, eggs, and white meat.

• Dairy products and products derived from them, which are a
good source of calcium and protein.

• Saturated fats in moderation.

Physical activity

The World Health Organization advises all adults to engage
in regular physical activity, including at least two sessions per week of
weight-bearing exercise, in addition to at least thirty minutes of moderate
aerobic activity daily. Being physically fit helps prevent secondary prevention
(i.e., the worsening of symptoms) of diseases like cardiovascular disease, certain
malignancies, diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis.

Healthy body weight

The importance of maintaining a healthy body weight for
overall health and illness prevention cannot be overstated. Body mass index
(BMI), a measurement of body fat based on height and weight, is a valuable tool
for determining if a person’s weight is healthy. A BMI score of 18.5 to 24.9 is
considered normal; a score of 25.0 to 29.9 suggests an individual is
overweight; and a score of 30 or higher denotes obesity. BMI score and disease
risk are positively connected, with higher scores indicating a higher risk of a
number of diseases, such as:

• Diabetes type 2

• Heart condition

• Liver disease

• Hypertension

• Mood issues

• Reproductive disorder

• Cancer risk

Obesity and being overweight increase the risk of disease.

Tobacco use

There is no degree of tobacco usage or smoking that is
considered safe. Therefore, never having smoked is correlated with the best
health outcomes.

Eight million individuals per year pass away from smoking-related
illnesses, with smoking being directly responsible for 70% of lung cancer
cases. The esophagus, mouth, throat, pancreas, stomach, and liver are just a
few of the numerous bodily parts where it can cause cancer. Smoking harms the
heart’s tissue and circulation, raising the risk of vascular disease,
myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

Moderate alcohol intake

One to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for
women constitute a moderate intake of alcohol. Consuming alcohol at these
amounts raises the likelihood of bad health effects. For instance, excessive
consumption can boost blood triglycerides, which raises the risk of heart
attack and stroke. Additionally, it can cause heart arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy,
and excessive blood pressure.

Spirituality

Spirituality is a broad concept with room for many perspectives. In general, it includes a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a search for meaning in life. As such, it is a universal human experience—something that touches us all. People may describe a spiritual experience as sacred or transcendent or simply a deep sense of aliveness and interconnectedness.

Some may find that their spiritual life is intricately linked to their association with a church, temple, mosque, or synagogue. Others may pray or find comfort in a personal relationship with God or a higher power. Still others seek meaning through their connections to nature or art. Like your sense of purpose, your personal definition of spirituality may change throughout your life, adapting to your own experiences and relationships.

Sustainable Development Goals

Times are not just difficult but also alarming for every sphere of our existence. At first glance, it might appear that the raging pandemic has temporarily paused climate action and initiatives related to other environmental issues. Sustainability, it appears, may have taken a back-seat too. However, with a decade left for the end of ‘Agenda 2030’, achieving sustainable development has become even more important.

A significant feature of the raging pandemic is that it has disrupted the hyper-interconnected world characterized by globalization. Supply chains are badly affected and global markets are under severe stress. Evidently, the virus has laid bare the vulnerabilities and risks of a globalized world order. In fact, it has put under scanner not just globalization but also the Sustainable Development Goals. Nevertheless, this could be a turning point for the international community to unlearn and revamp its basic conduct on global governance and make it more inclusive in nature. Besides, the pandemic has also thrown open an opportunity to give impetus to a glocalized framework of global governance to protect the ‘global commons’ in the light of the broader debate on sustainability.

This is where glocalization can fill the gap. Simply put, glocalization refers to the interpretation, representation and replication of the global elements at the local level.

The term, glocalization, is used quite frequently in business parlance but it has begun to gain momentum in cultural, social and political arenas too. Utilizing it appropriately in the environmental domain is the need of the hour.

The term, glocalization, is used quite frequently in business parlance but it has begun to gain momentum in cultural, social and political arenas too. Utilizing it appropriately in the environmental domain is the need of the hour.

Covid-19 has brought about the necessity of refining and revising globalization. This can be done by integrating glocal elements to achieve global good, be it sustainable development or climate action, by roping in local actors, such as subnational agencies, grassroots bodies, non-governmental organizations and other relevant non-State actors in the discussion on sustainability. Localizing economies would provide leverage to the development targets of those like India. This can help attain the much-needed balance between ecological equity and economic growth. Additionally, it is hard to overlook the expertise and knowledge offered by local populations that are located at ground zero and are in tune with ground realities. This kind of resource efficiency could prove to be useful in operationalizing the potential glocal elements of global governance. Factors like accountability, transparency and trust-building among the State and non-State actors are also vital in this context.

Considering the changes in modern living, starting from working remotely to radically cutting down on carbon footprints, glocalization could turn out to be a viable alternative to globalization, thereby creating innovative pathways for sustainable development in the near future.

THREE USEFUL HACKS FOR INCREASING YOUR CONCENTRATION

Give whatever you are doing & whomever you are with the gift of your attention – JIM ROHN .

Rightly said by him as with concentration you can achieve anything & everything . Concentration means focused attention, and it has many uses and benefits. It assists in studying, enables faster comprehension, improves the memory, helps in focusing on a task, job or goal, and enables you to ignore meaningless and irrelevant thoughts. When this ability is strong, the mind obeys you more readily and does not engage in meaningless thoughts. This ability plays an important role in meditation, gaining mental mastery, and attaining peace of mind. Without it, the mind just jumps restlessly from one thought to another, not allowing you to meditate properly. everybody wants to increase their concentration power , but this power needs some hacks to grow , so let me share few facts with which you can grow you concentration .

  1. GET SOME ‘GREEN TIME’ !

Each one of us knows that when we are surrounded with green , we feel refreshed & energetic . A dose of nature can work like a doctor for increasing concentration . suggests that exposure to natural surroundings, including green spaces, may prove beneficial for children’s brain development. In a study, children aged 4–5 to 7 years of age with more green space around their homes scored better in attention tests. These results underline the importance of expanding green areas in cities to support children’s health and brain development. exposure to greenery & increasing in concentration won’t stop at childhood , research has shown that colleges & institutes which are surrounded with greenery supports better mental health of children .

You may not have the luxury of a rooftop garden or an office laden with plants, but spending time outside someplace green, or eating your lunch in the park each day, could make a significant difference to your concentration.

2. TAKE a KITKAT BREAK !

People forget to take breaks , & this is what makes them stressful . A study found that people who read emails throughout the day switched screen twice as often and were in an ongoing state of high alert with a constant heart rate. When email was removed from these people for 5 days, their heart rate returned to a natural, variable one. The authors concluded that taking an email vacation significantly decreases stress and improves concentration and focus.

Few examples of break are here :

  1. Take a notification break : Everyone have observed that when ever you get notification from your phone you pic it up & check that notification . This is a thing which breaks your concentration . The team explained that task performance takes a hit because humans have a limited capacity for attention that needs to be split between tasks. The researchers also emphasized that just being aware of a missed text or call can have the same effect. If you need to stay on track and focused, it might be worth either turning off your cell phone, setting it to silent, or putting it away somewhere that you cannot see it.
  2. Social Media break : One should take social media break , because every time one wants to check their account , which break you concentration & make you walk on a less focused path .
  3. Work break : Excess work gives you tension , which lets you less concentration & more confusion .

Researchers recommend taking:

  • a mid-morning break to replenish concentration
  • better breaks by doing something you enjoy, which should make your break more restful, provide better recovery, and help you to come back to worked focused
  • frequent short breaks to facilitate recovery

Taking breaks earlier in the day and doing preferred activities lead to better health, job satisfaction, and revival of energy, motivation, and concentration.

3 . IMPROVE YOU WELL BEING : You know what , you food , sleep habits , working habits tells how concentrative you are . your habits of living you life decides you concentration level . Let me give you some tips to improve your concentration :

Walnuts may improve performance on tests for cognitive function, including those assessing information processing speed, memory, and concentration.

Avocados. Consuming one avocado every day may help improve cognitive function due to an upsurge in lutein levels in the eye and brain. Researchers uncovered that eating an avocado daily enhanced measures of cognitive skills, including processing speed, memory, and attention.

Chocolate — or specifically the cocoa bean — is rich in flavanols, which are compounds that have neuroprotective effects. Cocoa flavanols may help to improve cognitive processing speed, working memory, and attention when ingested for between 5 days and 3 months.

What Are Superfoods?

Superfoods are food items that are considered to be highly nutritious and hence beneficial to one’s health. They are primarily plant-based, however some include fish and dairy. Blueberries, salmon, kale, and acai are some of the few foods that have earned the “superfood” moniker. Nevertheless, there are no hard and fast rules for defining what is or isn’t a superfood.

Superfoods include a wide range of nutrients, including antioxidants, that are considered to protect against cancer. They also include good fats, that are considered to protect one against heart disease; fibre, that is believed to reduce diabetes and digestive issues; and phytochemicals, that are the compounds in plants that give plants their vivid colours and aromas and have various health advantages.

Consuming nutrient-dense foods (such as several so-called superfoods) is unquestionably beneficial. The best approach to a balanced diet, however, is to eat a variety of healthy foods in the appropriate proportions.

Some of the most common superfoods are:

BERRIES

Berries’ greater flavonoid content have been found to reduce the chances of a heart attack.  Acai berries, blueberries, raspberries, tart cherries, cranberries, and goji berries are some of the most well-known superfood berries.

Acai berries are tiny, dark purple berries native to South America. They include 19 amino acids as well as several antioxidants. Blueberries have a high fibre, manganese, and vitamin K content. Cranberries include a flavonoid which helps reduce the incidence of urinary tract infection. Goji berries are a tiny red fruit originating from Asia that is strong in vitamin C and E, as well as a variety of flavonoids. These are commonly used in Eastern medicine for treating diabetes and hypertension as well as to promote the health of the eyes, liver, and kidneys.

SOY

Soybeans contain a high amount of isoflavones, a kind of phytochemical. Phytochemicals are substances which are naturally found in plants. According to some studies, isoflavones in soy assist in lowering the quantity of bad cholesterol in the blood.

Soy has been demonstrated in a few trials to help reduce age-related dementia. Soy isoflavones may help decrease bone degeneration and enhance bone mineral density following menopause, in addition to alleviating menstrual pain.

TEA

Tea has minimal calories, aids in water absorption, and is high in antioxidants. Catechins, which are powerful antioxidants found predominantly in green tea, have anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects. According to one study, both green and white tea decreased stress levels, with white tea having an even larger effect. Green tea could possibly possess anti-arthritic properties due to its ability to reduce general inflammation.

LEAFY GREENS

Superfood leafy greens include kale, spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, and collard greens. These foods tend to be high in vitamin A, C, E, and K, as well as several B vitamins. Carotenoids, iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium are also abundant in leafy greens.

Kale and other leafy greens are rich in fibre and water content, which aid in constipation prevention and encourage regularity as well as a healthier intestinal system.

SALMON

Salmon and other fatty fish, such as trout and herring, have high omega-3 fatty acid content, which can reduce the risk of irregular heartbeats, lower cholesterol, and prevent the formation of arterial plaque.

DARK CHOCOLATE

Dark chocolate contains a high concentration of flavonoids, according to research. Flavonoids have antioxidant properties, can actually reduce the risk of  coronary heart disease and some forms of cancer, and therefore can enhance the immune system. Cacao powder is the ingredient in chocolate that is mainly responsible for these properties.

WINE AND GRAPES

Resveratrol, a polyphenol contained in wines which has earned itself the moniker “heart healthy,” is found in the skins of red grapes. Several studies have suggested that resveratrol can help prevent diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy. Resveratrol has also been proven to be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, the alleviation of menopausal symptoms, and the improvement of blood sugar regulation. Nevertheless, large-scale human-subject research is still needed to validate these conclusions.

Although wine contains antioxidants, remember that munching on grapes provides the very same benefits as well as added fibre.

Stress Management

Nowadays people have become fascinated about their money and beauty but they are not giving due care to their mental health. Stress is a mental tension caused by demanding ,taxing , burdensome circumstances and our increasingly busy lives.A life full of stress is something which is not acceptable and desirable by a person because when a person is in stress the hormones called CORTISOL and ADRENALINE are released into the blood stream thereby suppressing the functioning of the immune, digestive and reproductive system.

Also we need to understand every stress is not considered the bad one because stress is actually the survival response, when our body thinks that it is in danger it is also called as fight or flight response. The problem arises when the situation is constantly prevailing causing stress in the lives and a person don’t know how to manage it. That’s why stress management is tremendously important for our health, quality of life and relationships.

Migraines due to stress

Ways to Overcome Stress

1- Avoid Caffeine , Alcohol and Nicotine:

Many people try to overcome their stress by consuming alcohol , nicotine and rich in caffeine drinks but this is the big mistake people are committing which needs to be stopped first. Caffeine and Nicotine are stimulants which increases the level of stress rather than reducing it. Also alcohol is not ultimately helpful as it is a depressant when consumed in large quantities and a stimulant in small quantities. Herbal and other natural drinks must be consumed for keeping a person hydrated and to avoid these harmful stimulants.

2-Get more sleep:

Sleep plays an important role in maintaining a well being of an individual both physically and mentally. Lack of sleep is also an ultimate cause of stress. The environment of the bedroom must be calming and relaxing for a person so that they can have a sweet sleep also it is important to make sure that the bedroom is a tranquil oasis with no items of causing stress. There must be a fixed schedule for a person to sleep everyday so that the body get used to a predictable bedtime routine.

3-Talk to someone:

Communication allows a person to either distract them from their stressful situations or helps in reducing the built up tension by discussing it . In most of the situations a good friend and a colleague or a family member can guide us in a better way and also can provide us with the best solution for our stress.

4-Stress Diary:

In order to overcome stress the most significant thing is to understand what is the situation causing it so a person must have to maintain a stress diary in which they can write about their feelings and different situations along with their date ,time and the people they were with . This will eventually let them know what triggers them. It is basically a effective stress management tool to avoid stressful situations and to handle them with ease.

5-Physical activities:

Accompanying the daily life with proper exercises ,games and meditation will also help in avoiding stress as they can be used as a surrogate to metabolize the excessive stress hormones and restore the body in more calm state.

SELF IMPROVEMENTS, GOOD & BAD HABITS

See the source image

“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.”

Self improvement is an inner process, which focuses on changing one’s attitude toward oneself and toward the world, and on getting rid of harmful habits and building new good habits. The purpose of this inner process is to improve your behavior and habits, and to create happiness and satisfaction into your life. The aims of self-improvement are to learn to adopt a positive mindset, to get rid of negative habits, and to build positive habits and behavior. It is a process to make ourselves better and happier people. Self-improvement usually starts by becoming more aware of ourselves, our behavior and our reactions. It requires that we earnestly desire to improve ourselves, better our life, and build good relations with people. Self improvement improves your mental health, and helps you become aware of any bad habit, so you can change it. It also improves your life and helps you achieve your goals. This process includes simple steps to make you feel good about yourself, learn new skills, and even practice physical activity to improve your health and energy level.

Here is my try of self improvement:

My 5 Good Habits:

1. Drinking good amount of water

It is essential for a person to drink 3-4 liters of water everyday. There are many benefits of water that we often take for granted. Water not only helps hydrate our bodies, but it can also help prevent headaches, aid in digestion, and relieve bloating. Since water is a natural liquid, it’s much healthier for humans to drink than carbonated or high-sugar drinks like sodas or juices.

2. Going to gym

I go to gym 6 days a week. With our busy routine most of us tend to put our physical and mental health on the last of part of our day-to-day list. But the lack of exercise can cause serious health issues for you down the road. I believe that each one of us should at least take out 1 hour for any exercise activity.

3. Think Positive

Every time a negative thought enters your mind, think of the polar opposite thought to help train your brain to think positively. Objecting to negative or toxic thoughts by replacing them with positive thoughts is a healthy way to help challenge thoughts that don’t uplift you.

4. Spend Time with Family

One of the most neglected good habits is spending time with family. Thankfully I spend a good amount of time with my parents and siblings even though on some days I have a hectic schedule. It relaxes me and I fell happy from inside.

5. Practice good hygiene

One of the good habits of mine is practicing good hygiene along with a self care routine. Showering each evening or morning, doing my skin care routine before going to sleep is something which helps me to feel fresh and overcome my bad moods.

My 5 Bad Habits:

1. Not eating green vegetables

It is always recommend for us to eat more and more vegetables, especially green leafy veggies because they are very beneficial for our health and body as well. They not only help us to stay young, improve our bone strength and eye health but also prevent us from deadly disease such as cancer. I believe this is my worst habit and each one of us should adapt it.

2. Bad sleep routine

I go to bed at around 1:00 a.m. and wake up late the next day because of which I also miss my classes. By developing such bad routine we are putting our health at a higher risk.

3. Use phone before sleeping

One simple effect that watching a screen right before bed has is the fact that we don’t get tired enough to sleep. It keeps our mind psychologically engaged. All of us including myself should avoid using phone before we go to sleep.

4. No Morning Walk

Walking in the morning on a regular basis will result in multiple health benefits and not only improves physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. Morning walk enhances our metabolism, which may be a sign of getting a healthier body.

5. I study on bed and not on a table

A very bad habit of mine is that I always study while sitting or laying on a bed. Because of this I sometimes have neck as well as back pain. We should study on a proper table-chair , it helps us to focus on our work.
